Don't want to get into a debate over whether a reshelled Cooper S is still a Cooper S - everyone has their own opinion on that! However, with these cars trading hands for a lot of money, people do have a right to know what they are being sold? Yes or No?

The poms are building Cooper S's from nothing more than a V5 (rego number/certificate) not even a single original part of the car.

and no matter how much we cry foul John, the horse has already bolted...way too many clever people involved now that there is a sniff of profit available in Oz and our lack of a standard set of rules for Feds and State Gummints just plays into their hands :(

its illegal to change a vehicle ID... so a "reshell" is fraud ... pure and simple.

Back (I suppose 15 + years ago) there was a similar case involving a Mini. The third owner just happened to approach the builder (who he didn't know) about some problems he was having with his new "CooperS". Embarrassing (and expensive) conversation ensued....for the second owner that is - who'd bought a "Mini with S bits" but sold a "genuine" S .

Cheers, Ian

This is the rebodied 1071 from Northern Tasmania that was being sold as the real thing years ago!

This also raises the point of how much can you replace before its illegal? You see pommy sites showing rusted shells cut down to a few bits and rebuilt using new panels.

I know of one Cooper S that was legally approved to be re-bodied, there may be more out there...not an ideal situation but better to have cars on the road than written off

At least any potential buyer could be full bottle on the cars history...

Once you have replaced both handle and head it is not the original.
