What fluid are people putting in their parts cleaner? I'm about to purchase a small 12L electric parts washer to clean up a few parts.

I've heard of people using the obvious like Unleaded petrol, Diesel, Kero, Degreaser etc..... What's the most cost effective product to use with good results? Including use on gearbox main and needle bearings?

Cheers

I use a 50/50 mix of kero and degreaser. The kero cleans well and the degreaser allows it to rinse off easy. Don't use the water based degreaservin it, it just rusts the tub etc.

I used diesel, as kero & petrol give me dermatitis but diesel doesn't. Then I use Supercrap degreaser spray for final cleaning.

Kero, mainly because last time I checked it was the cheapest that gave reasonable results and, if I close the lid on the bath when its not in use, doesn't evaporate the quickest.

I should check the cost of Supercheap degreaser if they do it in drums but, if it is the same as they put in the aerosol cans, I'm not gonna be surprised if I open the wash-bath lid and find that if there is still any in there it is too low for the pump to pick up!

I use kerosene and it work fine, does not evaporate too much, and I can leave the parts in the cleaner and they don't seem to rust. I do final clean-up with the cleaner I use for electroplating so the parts end up chemically clean.
Cheers

The brake cleaner in 20 litre drums is good to rinse bits.

Where are people picking up bulk Kero from?

Found 3L of the Diggers brand of Kero for $15 today.
That's $60 to fill from bottles. As you can guess I didn't get it!

Surely there are cheaper ways to get Kerosene in bulk, otherwise Diesel at $1.50L looks a better cost effective solution.

Do NOT use petrol. It's far too dangerous (and toxic). Especially in such large volumes. For steel items, dilute caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) say 10%, with a dollop of detergent (washing up liquid). It's cheap, effective and can be safely heated. Ideal for an ultrasonic bath. It will be corrosive to Aluminium however..

Next time you're out on a drive in the country, take a drum with you. A lot of old country servos have bulk kero, or try a refinery outlet.

Ended up buying some of this stuff, haven't used it yet so cant comment. The CT brand is meant to be pretty good. Cost about $35 for this 5L concentrate. See how it goes in the parts cleaner.

Looked all over the place for Kerosene from a service station bouser, but everyone who did sell it previously have seemed to stop selling it at least several years ago now! So no luck there.

Buying Kerosene in drums and bottles is way too expensive I think for what the product is. Cant bring myself to do it at this stage

Exactly why I didn't bother with the bottled stuff. Rort!

Pitty Penrith is about 350km away!
