Would the best way to set the revs be to wind up the idle speed? I guess it wouldn't matter the vacuum being open if the only thing being changed is the total mechanical advance.

I'll see if I can record it at a couple of points and plot a little advance curve

Thanks!

Hey Tim. Can't answer your q above but just wanted to mention to hook up the timing light with engine off as described in the manual that's wedged in the cardboard packaging...

Tim, it's pretty easy to hold the timing light with 1 hand and use the other for the throttle. Unless you are using the flywheel marks, then you need more hands...

Tim,
I use the idle screw to hold the revs at about 4000rpm and I use a mirror to see the flywheel marks. Another tip is to use an external battery to power the timing light.

I had a go at this yesterday (and burned my finger on the exhaust manifold). I noticed the timing light was reading ~200rpm lower than the TIM tacho inside. I'd guess the timing light would be more accurate. I used a spare external battery to power it, and had the mirror to look through at the flywheel marks. I have an old side mirror which stayed in place when the engine is idling, but with more revs it was flopping about!

I started off checking the timing at idle (seeing as I did it by eye when I put the engine back in) and started off with 8 degrees at idle using the advance function.

I then upped the advance on the timing light to 30 degrees with the vacuum advance disconnected. I was able to rev the engine while holding everything in place, but when it was getting up above 3500rpm the timing light was not flashing anymore :? . It drives pretty nice now and doesn't ping, so it doesn't have too much advance I guess. I might have another go at it this week using the idle screw to up the idle to give me more hands check the timing marks..

Definitely going to put some timing marks on the fan pulley when I do the next engine!

It would be good if you could get a timing sticker for the harmonic balancer , i did have a quick look for something ages ago , but anything i found was way too big for the balancer , i then totally forgot about it  .

Don't have a harmonic balancer on this engine.. wish I had of thought of this when I had the engine out! Even measuring with a protractor and using a hacksaw/punch would leave some useful timing marks

I make a steel pointer (a bit of an old hex allen key is good) and braze or MIG it to the front of the timing cover.
Then I set the motor to TDC #1 with a dial gauge on the piston, and file a V mark on the pulley or balancer.

Can see the pointer on my 1412 stroker here (behind the fan belt)-

I've got a 5568 - http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/ino-5568/overview/

You're welcome to come and check it out if you want poeee.

I'd been thinking about buying one of these lights for ages , but couldn't justify the price considering i have a perfectly good light that i"ve had for years ( only not dial-back ) .
Checked E-bay Aus to see what was about and bought a 5568 off this mob ,

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252024490659 ... EBIDX%3AIT

It turned up today ,looks the goods , just need some time to have a play with it and figure it out .

I did have the dial back timing lamps but have now sold them all. I am not sure whether to import more or not as they were quite a slow seller. Any one interested in any let me know and I will get more in. I also have the Black boxes in stock if any one is interested in buying local and supporting someone who tries hard for the enthusiast to get them great products at the correct prices.

A bit of a thread revival. Looking for a timing light today and found this http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... mendations

would this function "- Advance angle metre: (2 & 4 cycle DIS & Conventional): 0o to 90o (+/- 0.5% accuracy)" be the dial back advance feature that is mentioned in the thread?

It looks like a dial back timing light. It has the same features and looks very similar in design to the Innova 5568 - Probably made by the same people and re-branded.

Beauty! I decided to grab it while I was out. But haven't taken it out of the wrapper yet.

Looks the same as my Innova, right down to the cable plug.
