Next time you're out on a drive in the country, take a drum with you. A lot of old country servos have bulk kero, or try a refinery outlet.

Just like the one in the background of this pic  , Geeez , haven't seen one of those since the 80's   .

Try storing stuff like that at petrol stations today I reckon the bomb squad would be called and a 5 km exclusion zone enforced just for a tank of kero and what every is in the tank in the corner

In 1970 a petrol refill for the Cooper S involved filling a large metal jug with methyl benzine stored in a 20 gallon drum on the forecourt, then carrying it across to the car and adding half to each tank, finally topping-up with super grade petrol. All this was done while navigating around those customers and staff who were sucking on a fag.

Methyl benzine was lethal at stripping the duco so you needed to be careful decanting.

That brings back memories. I was doing exactly that in the early 70's with my then MkII

Is also known as Toluol...

Back when I was racing, at one stage I had a small deal with Ampol and got given drums of Toluene and this chart...

Warning, don't use Methyl Benzine/Toluol/Toluene/Paint Thinners, etc. as a degreaser, you will either burn to death or get cancer and die a slow horrible death.

When I was searching kero for a heater at work I came up with this place for bulk heating oil. from memory it was about $2 per ltr.

Rapid Oil Distributors
Oil Refinery
Address: 15 Deniehy St, Clyde NSW 2142
Phone:(02) 9897 5264

Having said that I just use diesel.

I was getting kero in 25 litre drums from the local sheltered workshop. They bought it in bulk and put it into 1L containers for Bunnings and Mitre 10 to sell, but seem to have gone out of business. It was about $2 a litre.

Next time I'll try to track down the low-odour stuff. Ordinary kero stinks really badly, I wear gauntlets and an apron to try to keep the stench off my clothes.

Toluene or methyl benzene is not carcinogenic. Besides having a great Octane Number, it is a brilliant solvent. It WILL dissolve fuel lines and rubber gaskets etc if used in some of the ratios mentioned above. Ditto Benzene, however Benzene IS carcinogenic...

Toluene might not give you cancer, but I still wouldn't go breathing much of the fumes in! We use it at work occasionally, but only under the fume hood.

Hi Timmy, I grew up sniffing the stuff with work (Petroleum Chemist) and seem ok so far (Having said that, people think I'm not normal haha!)
Having said that, Benzene was already banished from the lab in 1980 when I started my degree..

An afterthought, if people have questions regarding fuel Octane properties and performance etc feel free to ask. I maintain/ operate/ overhaul refinery Octane Engines so I guess I know what I'm talking about. A lot of what I read is, well, rubbish..

Cheers

Mikal

We just follow the SDS from the manufacturer, don't want to upset all the safety people these days...
