Following on from my post above, page 37 of Issue #19 of TME covered the Morris Mini Minor (YDO4), sometimes called the fleet model, where Watto said: "... YDO4 was essentially a Morris 850 with the new wind-up windows".

Mine is a 64 (not sure when it was sold but all the parts are 64 stamped) and it has sliders, small number plate boot and single peice hood lining. .

MrFail, We are a bit surprised that your 64 has a single piece head lining. Are you able to pass on your car Number please. As we are also looking to find out the actual Car numbers when the change took place.

I also owned a Sept? 64 850 with the 1 piece hood lining. I sold it to Anton Kraus, he restored it and was featured in TME.

More recent information shows that the Morris Mini Minor (ie: the 850 with the wind-up windows) was introduced in October or November 1965 - see below image of driver's handbook for car number YMA2S3 562, sold new to NSW Police on 8 November 1965.

These used the same Australian-pressed body panels as the Mini De Luxe, hence the same doors with wind-up windows, but retained the dry cone suspension and the "pudding stirrer" gear selector of the 850. Between January 1966 and January 1969 there were reportedly 2,248 Mini Minors built.

As you can see, car numbers reverted to 501 with the new model, as would be expected, so numbers on all these cars should be quite low.

It is likely that this late introduction, some 7 months after the introduction of the Mini De Luxe, was due to remaining sliding-window body shells being used up in 850 production. It is not likely (though you can't discount all sorts of silly decisions from BMC) that there would have been sliding-window 850s and wind-up window 850s available at the same time, even for special orders from PMG, etc, due to the unviable nature of such production. BMC Australia at that time seemed to be pretty switched on and was at its most profitable period, with the Mini at its sales peak.

I think the engine numbers may help sort out this mess.

This is a Mini 850 sold in April 1966.

This car was sold much later than Watto's Mini Minor example but has a lower engine number.
It appears they had trouble selling the 850 after the introduction of the Deluxe.

The car in Morris 1100's post is a good example of a slow-seller. The car number shows the 60,000 figure for Morris 850s is about right. The low number and date of the police Mini Minor in my previous post is proof of when these cars were available. The fact that both were being sold at the same time, though, doesn't mean they were both being manufactured at the same time. The Mini Minor replaced the 850 and was not produced along side it.

Interestingly, my Morris 850 was supplied with a Morris MiniMinor drivers handbook from the dealer Premier Motors. Looks to be a UK publication.

Sorry, just a side track for a moment.
Some of this info may solve a mystery for my wife's deluxe. It was a build date of November 1965 but sold February-March 1966 and registered as a 1966. has all the usual deluxe gear, 998, hydralastic, black speedo, fresh air heater under the bonnet, deluxe trim. Recently when I replaced the front floor panels I had to use 850 floor panels as the hydralastic type did not line up correctly. The hydralastic lines underneath the car followed close to the tunnel, not through the centre of the floor and did not have the long hydralastic covers. It came from the factory like this. My guess is that there must have been some 850 bodies unsold and were made up at the factory as deluxes.

No, all Australian Minis up till early to mid 67 (?) used the early type floors.
It is nothing to do with using 850 parts, it was an improvement to fix durability problems.

The topic now seems to have changed (happy with that).

On the roof linings..we are now chasing the highest car no with a 2 piece roof lining.

To date we have Car no..51000 with a 2 piece roof lining.

We are looking for car numbers lower than (59100), ( 535**), (52000) now 51500 for a one piece.

We will have another question for everyone shortly  (Just need to take a pic)
