Just checking the timing on my Cooper S
its been set at about 12 deg at idle
If i read the BMC Manual i have it says to set at about 2-3 btdc
My Manual is very vague about most things
I have googled this and got answers of setting for max advance at 4000-5000 rpm
Whats Max Advance
I have a basic timing light with no advance knob
So what do you guys set yours at
Thanks
Marc

The factory numbers were for leaded Super petrol. Unleaded needs more advance.
With 98 fuel, most modded 1275s run best with around 10-12deg BTDC static, and a total advance of 30deg @ 3500 up. This can vary 28-32 depending on cam etc. Check with vac advance disconnected if you have it.
To check total advance you need a dialback timing light, or else put a 30deg BTDC mark on the flywheel or crank pulley for use with a standard type one.

Not sure if you have the MK1 S 23D4 40819H or Mk2 S 29D4 AYG0175 but they both pretty much had the same advance curves and a 15 degree mechanical advance plate. The reason why the book says 2 degrees is because it will give you 32 degrees @ 3500rpm. If you advance the idle you will need to change the 15 degree advance plate to something more like 10 degrees by welding the stop contact.

GundyGuys footer says 1970 MK II S so I guess it's the latter - 29D4.

If you borrow a dialback timing light it has a tacho in it, it is easy to plot what advance curve the dizzy has. Even if it's a genuine Mk2 S one, many are modified already.

I found it's also worth having the diissy properly checked. My original dissy due to worn springs was all over the shop when properly checked, also the cam that operates the points was worn and so giving a inconsistent output between each of the 4 plugs by a degree or so.

My car is fitted with a Crane Cams XR700 Electronic Ignition
I might invest in a decent timing light

I had one of them but the dwell was set at 73 degrees which waists a lot of energy and makes the coil heat up. It also needs a ballast resistor.

Accuspark stealth box works great, you lock the advance in your dizzy and program the advance curve with your PC.
I've had mine for 18 months, I think Mick is running them in both his cars.

I love them to pieces. High energy coil, electronic module and no scatter :)

The module in the dizzy is turned into just a trigger switch, so runs very cool. The switching load is taken by the blackbox in the cabin, so no overheating modules. If the blackbox fails (which hasn't happened yet), I can just connect the dizzy back to the -ve side of the coil and get home.

There is a thread here somewhere on the black box.
