Have been looking through old posts regarding distributors but really couldn't find what i was after

My Question is
What is the correct position of the Dist body when installed in the block (Aussie Lucas 29D)
That is the position of the 2 cap clips

Mine the bottom clip wont undo due to it hitting the oil cooler

So i think its not installed correctly

Anyone got some photos or scans out of a proper manual
my Leyland Aust one is hopeless

It really doesn't matter how the dizzie is oriented... as long as the points are opening when the lead the rotor is pointing to is attached to the No 1 plug when No 1 piston is at the top of its compression stroke.... (and, of course, the clips don't get in the way ...

The easiest way is (IMHO) would be to move the No 1 lead to the old No 3 dizzie cap terminal and then rotate the dizzie clockwise (90 odd degrees) until the rotor is pointing at the "new" No 1 (old No 3)...... The rotor arm will not move as the dizzie rotates around it.

You will then just need to check the timing at the new position.

You could remove the dizzie and the drive and rotate the drive a couple of teeth but the first solution is less messy (IMHO :)

Cheers, Ian

Fixed.

I have seen so many people drop the dizzy drive into the sump when trying to move the dizzy to the correct position. On one forum a bloke cut a hole in the gearbox to get the drive out! (he patched it with plywood)

On an S engine, you just need to pay a little attention to the clip position because the oil cooler and oil cooler hoses make it a little tricky. So sideways is easier as you can't get your hands underneath.

Thanks for the photo
thats all i was after
Easy to turn the dist and move the leads on the cap to suit
The XR700 Electronic ignition module has a static timing red light to help set the timing

No, Poeee had a set on an engine in his shed once upon a time. They do come up on eBay though, usually connected to entire distributors dragged out of the nether regions of sheds and covered in red dirt. You have to look carefully!

These ones were wiped and cleaned using thinners and the copper contacts (they're copper cored, not carbon/cotton) cleaned with vinegar then washed clean.
