Is there any way of knowing what colour a MK2 'S' was originally painted.

Not really. You can look for evidence of a colour, put up a pic if you find some and I think you will get some answers from the masses. Try looking under the tray of the dash, under the rear seat or even take out the hood lining, you should see overspray onto the roof, particularly around the A and B pillars

no , not on the list
Not that it meas much but I'd prefer it it list a white roof ,
but without the original books I guess we'll never know.
Just scanning the list , it seems about 1/2 of the Jet Red cars had a white roof.

While I'm at it , what are the numbers under the ??/06 on the firewall.
Do they need to correspond to anything ?
Sorry , I know this question has been asked a hundred times before.

It should have 2/06 and then under will be the body number from the assmbley line. Usually around 500 less than the car number YG2S4 xxxx. Being on the firewall is it a mid 1970 car? Earlier cars had the 2/06 in the drain gutter above the wiper motor.

Very few Mk2 cars came painted with a different colour roof. Most were monotone but some dealers added the white roof to help move them.
I would still check the less conspicuous places for colour. Many cars have changed colour over the years, particularly to become either red or green, but few people have done the complete job and hidden everything.
Care to share any pics

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Jet Red was a 69 colour and not offered in 70

Some cars are 470 some are 530. Doesn't mean anything as they were jumbled up on the assembly line.
