Impossible to give a verdict if it is a genuine car from the photos. It has what looks to be a genuine ID plate but that could have been attached to a deluxe body shell 20 years ago. If it is a genuine car it has had a lot of parts swapped out and would need a bit of time and money if you wanted to put it back to original. Seats, heater, carbies, brake servo, speedo, master cylinders, alternator, cylinder head, steering column shroud and indicator stalk.

I can't see anything in the photos that makes me think it is a Cooper S but I can see a couple of things that make me think it might not be one.

So here's where I'm at, at the moment.

I'm thinking, trying to find a legit car, fully restored with provenance is going to cost me $40k (more than my budget).

Car 2718 looks neat, has been resprayed and has a lot of money spent on it. For $18K I think its a fair price (he has sent me photos of receipts totalling $15K)

The car is currently at a Mechanic pending a "pre-purchase inspection" .. Murray's Motors QLD.

I have contact QLD mini club and they MAY be able to find someone to authenticate the vehicle.

For $18K I'm happy to blast around in it for a while and maybe sell it for a small loss later on. In the meantime I can learn more about them and wait for a very special one to come up.

Am I being "Mini Delirious" ?

Also, how can I do PPSR (Revs) check on it as it doesn't have a VIN plate?

It is registered with chassis 2718 so try using that. I Haven't done a revs check before to check for encumbrances -I just use the online rego checks to check chassis and engine numbers.

I thought I'd provide an update on those interested....

I had the car inspected at Murrays Motors a "Mini, Leyland, Austin specialist" and subsequently spoke to the mechanic, Murray.
He assured me it was a "good one" and gave a very good character reference for the seller, whom had known for many years.

For better or worse, the engine has been swapped out, it is currently powered by a 1100s motor (12DTAH8795) the suspension has been changed to Hydro (I don't know what that means).

It runs well and is free from rust.

I'm now a very excited Mini Owner (albeit a Bitsa). Maybe one day The Finance Dept may allow me to collect a "100percenta"

If it is a genuine Cooper S it should have Hydrolastic from the factory. Instead of coil springs like a normal car it has fluid filled rubber bags that act as springs and shocks.

Older (and newer) minis have "dry" suspension which is solid rubber springs

At the end of the day are you happy with the car and what you gave for it ? , either way you will have the same amount of fun whether it is a genuine S or someones version of an S depending on what they told you it was if it performs as one .
