I have just refitted the under-dash Smiths heater after freeing up the seized tap and lo and behold, the damn thing has a small leak, so the carpet will end up wet etc so impossible to let this be. I saw a replacement tap that is fitted to the head, however it appears to operate in the opposite direction as the under-dash tap viz. when the lever is pushed to the hot position, the cable is being pulled, so the tap on the head will actually close. In other words, the tap operation on the head is completely opposite to the tap under-dash. I would like to fix this permanently, so if a tap were to leak in future, it would happen in the engine bay out of harms way. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Worked fine for abt 3 years before I sold the car. Tap is well made and should last at least 6 years I would say.

Just picked up a new one from a mate, an HA4008 for $16. This one is a PUSH off and PULL on. I was going to fit a valve directly to the head BUT the one available is a PUSH on and PULL off, so instead of modify that type and buying a new longer cable, I'll just modify the bracket to hold the valve properly - as ex toolies do! It operates nice and smoothly and even though it is 5/8 the 1/2 inch hose fits with a little persuasion (soapy water helps too) so now to design/modify the heater bracket and fix it for good, I hope.

I've been using this universal valve for just over a year - no leaks and easy to operate in my clubby van using std original cable. It was a little fiddly modifying the mounting bracket on the heater, as I didn't want to use a cable tie, so fitted it directly - much more secure. I also use Penrite 10 tenths coolant and operate the valve every couple of months, so all is good to date.
