D top pistons were needed with the 998 as the 100cc less displacement would give a lower C/R with flat tops.

[edit] 295 head has a BIG chamber.
Note early 1098 Sprites had the 12G202 head (as did the 997 Cooper).

The 295 works perfectly with a 1098 engine, it's almost as though it was designed for it... It was used in the MG1100 (and Sprite?) before the Cooper

Hi Wild willy, Yes my Cooper engine did come with a 295 head fitted. The engine and head have been modified and rebuilt with GR bits. Am pleased to say another Cooper 998 has been saved. JimB.
