Just wondering what people use to secure their number plate
to the flap on early cars. Should there be holes or not.
Notice on mine no holes and really no way of securing except for double
sided tape which I've used.

that's a bit odd! surely someone would have drilled holes in it at some point over the last 50 years!

I need to figure out a more elegant way to hold the plate on and hide the old screw holes... It was previously using self tapping screws

I plugged all the old holes before painting, then used 4 tamper proof screws & nuts on my historic plate.
It now has custom Bling frames made from tile edging (4 pcs mitre cut).

This is my style.

The large backing plate is the same size as a standard ACT number plate. The historic plate is held on with Sikaflex 11FC, and the four screws are dummies.

I was thinking of doing something like this. Did you make the backing plate or buy it? I was thinking of getting something neatly cut.

You can get after market number plates made up, so I've been thinking of getting a full size one in white with no characters on it, and doing something similar to DavidE above. That way you'll have the nice stripe around the outside.

The set on one car was made for me out of stainless steel, but the one/s in the picture I made myself out of aluminium sheet, cut to size and I rounded the corners using my vertical linisher. I have a spare and surplus set in stainless steel.

You can try double sided tape or Velcro!

No, I did not.

+1 for double sided tape. I know plenty of cars that have number plates held on with double sided tape. But don't use too much because then that is annoying if you need to remove the plates.

Thanks for the response guys. I guess the double sided tape will do for now since it doesn't go too far

Just think about how much you use though. Too much and if it's strong you might bend the plate if you ever need to remove it. Too little weak it might fall off.

I ordered some UK size plates from eBay. They were just under $40 delivered for the pair, and they came with some double sided tape, and also some security screws. They are exactly the right size to surround the Historic plate.

I've got them held on temporarily at the moment, but they look much better than all the holes showing on the flap. I've just got to decide if I use the double sided tape or the security screws (and what do to about the front plate too).
