Good find Doug and yes same plug caps, they have a distinct shape. I have found a couple more magazine period road test cars just recently with them fitted.

I found a set of original number tags on some old leads, the numbers are long faded away. They are quite thin, more like shrink wrap, or similar to the yellow label on the cooler hoses. I think perhaps they started out as one long tube with the 1 2 3 4 printed on and then they were divided up with scissors. Some I've seen are very unevenly cut like mine are.

Well, today I finally got around to assembling a new set of plug leads using four new old stock WC 187 Champion plug caps. These suckers cost twice as much as my second Mini did in 1974!
However, they are period correct & are even featured in the engine bay pic of the 1967 Mini brochure, so I'm wrapt to finally have them! After I've finished showing 'em off, they'll be installed...

Hi Ian,
Mate I assume you are buying these for your Mk2 ex-Bathurst car. If so these are not the correct plug leads and caps. Call me I have a spare set here for you.
G.

I know this subject has come up before but can we have some photo's of what people think is the correct spark plug caps for Australian mini's incluing the Clubman GT.
I've seen a number of photo's but I'm still unsure of the correct cap for the year of each model.
Nothing like a chat about original detailing in engine bays :-)
Lots of photo's,Models and year of manufacture.

All of the early Australian Mini parts books list part 8G576 as the cap, with 12A365 sleeve and 7H6894 clip. I can't find a picture of 8G576 but assume it's the one shown at the start of this thread - Champion WC187 that Phillb has shown us in another thread.

Here are two photos of a GT engine bay. One is from the crash test photo that appears to be a late rather than early model (with the four-way breather). The other is part of an article in Australian Country magazine dated Feb 1972, so may be a prototype or press/demo model. Since they are both the same cap it would be a safe guess that it was used during most of the GT production.

The Mark II Cooper S certainly had the solid plastic numbered cap like the photo below of my 1970 car. I don't know when they began or ended.

Doug,
I have another factory photo in colour of an Australian Mk1 Cooper S engine I will dig out, and they have a different set of plug leads again. I got the pic from John Hesselwood, so will scan it an post it up.

I honestly think they used what ever they had in those days... I have a 1968 brochure I have uploaded here ( in the members section) using the WC187 plugs..

So who knows... :-/

Yes Brett, that's the photo I keep looking at, but I place the brochure at circa 1967?

If Champion couldn't supply a particular type of plug cap but an equivalent spec/quality cap was available then I'm sure they would have fitted it instead. These sort of parts would be bought in bulk too so even a single different batch would effect many hundreds of cars.

So far I have found period photos of 2 road test cars in 66, a new Monaco, the hot run motor and the late 67 brochure mentioned above with the WC187 fitted.

Interested to see what else people have seen fitted or remember.

Also wondering what were they using on the Minor and Deluxe at the time? Same or something cheaper?

I think someone worked out it was a late 67 car in a 1968 brochure.

It has the master cylinder extensions that I believe were deleted at YKG2S2 3792 (Dec 1967).

Phil, That looks like a top job.
Would anybody have a more detailed photo of the spark plug caps for the MK 2 Cooper S and also including the leads and cap?
Would they be a Champion or Lucas produced item?

Don't know who made them but there are some photos in these posts.

Looking at these photos the Coil HT lead appears to have a heavy sheath around it.
