Is it possible (if there are no leaks) for the fluid to be "compressed". If fluid is not leaking, how does it ultimately need "topping up"

I am a hydro newbie.....and I ask the same question as you, Mr Photoshop

Fluid does not compress- but we are not talking about steel hydraulic cylinders here.
Top part of a hydro bag is a tapered rubber cone, hence is flexible and can deflect.
Think rubber cone suspension (similar to dry type) with a fluid cavity & valves inside, that is what a hydro displacer is.
 Watch the hydro hoses move up when you bounce the front of the car car down, as the rubber flexes.

so are these helper springs able to be re tensioned (is that the right description?)?

Or is it a case of buying new ones if they are available?

Mick

No they are not adjustable, but you could either get some (shorter) ones made, or scrounge some that are not stretched. Kazjim had a pile a while back.

Iwannamini, if it's low, yes I still have ze pompe..

So why do hydro minis seem to sag at the front so bad?

Can this be adjusted out without discharging the system to shim?

I can see three problems that can cause the front to be lower than the back.
1) Look at the design of the system and you will notice that if the car is lowered the rear springs are under less tension. As you pump the car up the helper springs gain more tension. Pump the suspension to the proper pressure and the front will be at the same height as the rear.
2) Hydro bags can sag with age. Swap the fronts and rears around and it can fix the problem.
3) The helper springs lose tension.

Helper springs are colour coded. Some time around 1970? they changed the rear strut design, and shortened the helper springs. I think the late ones are all coded orange..

Too much pressure for that Gaf....
Spring makers still exist in Sydney, could go get some shorter ones made if that is the problem.
I'd find a pair of orange ones that are still good. Everybody and his dog must have some, going by the number of Deluxes & Ks that have been bastardised to dry suspension...

Woo hoo, I'll give the springs a go.

I don't like the idea of draining the hydro system though....Some evil plans are forming in my mind to avoid this untidy draining business

Benefits of draining the fluid:
1. It will clean your driveway
2. It'll get the 35 year old rusty water out of the system
3. It'll make it easy to change the springs! :P

You don't need to let it all out, just let down until it's sitting on the bumpstops.
And there's no need to evacuate it before repumping, unless you took the plumbing apart.
Anyhow, I have pump, will travel. PM me if you need it!

These bumpstops might help to releave the pressure on the hydrolastic system a little.

There's also a set available for the rear. They've been available for many many years, and will allow you I believe to still get home if you bust a bag although they're really meant to simply stiffen the girl up.

I've got an ancient set on mine at the moment.Image
