If your car has a fuel filter change it (or remove it) before you do anything else.
When a fuel filter is blocked it will fail under load. It will run fine downhill but when you put the foot down it will lose power.

They did not come with a fuel filter and according to SU they don't need one! But I will leave it up to you if you want to run one. 8)

The filter should be between the pump and the carby.
It should not be between the tank and the pump. (unless the filter is designed for this purpose.) Filters are designed to have fuel pushed through them and they can close up if used under suction.

I am a fan of the mechanical pump. It is simple and it does the job. If you were running a big motor with huge carbys you may need to use an electric pump.

Yeah i like my mech pump too, i'm afraid of strange new loud noises :).

My plan was to go grab a new filter, see if that does anything and then see what pump options i have.

Reckon you're on the right track there shard.

If you do fit a lekky pump, put a hidden switch for it. Cheap immobiliser

My Fuel pump decided to piss out petrol last week!!!!!!!!! Cleaned engine well though. Ended up buying a rebuld kit from Bargain Autospares in Ferntree Gully my new favourite parts shop! Looks like crap from outside but they got everything I need when I need it so far. Cost $45 and couple of hours of my time to clean it and do what book says but i worth it! Much smoother running now! Need a hand PM me! :D

So riding down to supercheap this morning was ****ing freezing but I picked up the filter and headed back.

Felt like a dick putting a $2 filter on eftpos, but today was payday and I hadn't been to an atm yet. Sspent all my change yesterday on a condensor.

Got home and switched them over. Wasn't happy with the way it was sitting (or the prev one for that matter) so I reached into my patented box'o'crap and pulled out a hose of similar size and cut it slightly longer. Happy that it was sitting vertical I turned it over and immediately realised that the carby wasn't as loud as it usually is with the filter off, and the intake sounded a lot more consistent.

With a smile already on my face I jumped in and took it for a spin. It purred along great, better then I've ever had it since fitting the extractors/exhaust.

Next job: buying a MC kit and fixing up that leaky brake MC :D.

Big thanks to everyone that helped along the way. I'm sure someone out there knows how i'm feeling now, almost a week without a car and in the end it was a $2 fix. Hell I've learnt more then my monies worth along the way though :D.

Can't stop smiling :D :D :D.

I'll move back onto the clubbie later in the arvo. I'll have pics of the oil leak up later today.

Well done, fixed for $2 :D

(yes, been there, done that).
Can't remeber who (Brock, Grice?) was leading at Bathurst in a Commodore & broke down due to a similar $2 piece of plastic.

Glad you're back on the road 8)

Mike

Sorry for the stupid questions.. but I have a similar problem I think.. Where abouts is the fuel pump, Is it near the tank? Where abouts is the filter located? (this is for a deluxe btw)

Have a look over the back of your engine....on the right hand side...if you have a mechanical pump fitted to the side of the engine block just above the gearbox join...then....you will see a fuel line coming from it to your carbie....

filter (if fitted) is usually close to the carby as well....just follow the fuel line on the right side of the firewall...

Dunno if a deluxe has one fitted, but on mine the mech pump is on the right at the back of the engine. You'll be able to identify it by a fuel line coming out of the body going in one end, and out of the other a second fuel line going to the carburettor.

Inbetween the carburettor and the fuel pump might be a white fuel flter attached. Mine was a Ryco z91.

Like I said in my earlier post....

Minis were not fitted with a fuel filter from the factory. (excluding late model pommie built stuff) If it has a filter someone has added one (probably for the wrong reason)

I do not run a filter on my car (1100 with twin SUs) and I have not had any problems.

Might not have been factory fitted, but obviously it picks up crap. Upon closer inspection there was quite a lot of black stuff in the one I removed. If the filter doesn't pick it up it's going straight to the carby .

And if it gets into the carby?
Anything that can get through the pump should be able pass through the carby, that is one of the hidden features of the SU, it does not have small passages that can block up with particles (unlike a weber)

How can you block up a filter if you don't have one!

or.... If your car didn't have a filter this thread wouldn't exist!

if it goes through the carby then it's going into my engine?

I'm pretty mechanically challenged but i'd have thought black stuff being caught in a filter probably isn't the best thing to be sending into an engine long term?
