The engine is out

and i assume it has been sent off :!:

silly it is really

i dont even know how its going to work :? :P

I have given the mechanics some prices for a few kits, and if they cant beat them , i think i have to buy them in

Its so funny 8) cause its so ridiculous
spending so much on a mini

the problem with finding another engine
is well no they dont exist, so there isnt that option

you won't regret it, and saving money by not rebuilding it is just false economy

Called into the mechanic today.
And got filled in with the details.

The engine had been sent off this morning. He had a quick look at the engine before he sent it, and he said that a couple of the piston rings were very worn or collapsed, something of the like.

Also, (just going on what i remember parts were called)
The crankshaft thrustwashers were in the worst condition he had ever seen for that part on any vehicle. He showed me the groove(s) that it is meant to have, and it was worn like crazy.
So he didnt know what would happen with the crankshaft, weather it will pass, or be able to be repaired, or if i need a new one, with the thrushes being machined to something very fat.
Aslo the camshaft endfloat was not like something he had seen before. SO that was bad.

Also,
The radiator. The core seemed 'fine enough', there was a repair patch from a previous job, and a few clips off the side were missing, And the small oval shaped tubes going down the core, many many were completely blocked.
So that will be sent off to a specialist, and their probe will try to remove the gunk, and fix up any core damage.

Also,
He showed me my oil pump.
It is 99.9% knackered he said.
It was shocking. (his words)
the grooved and 'creases' and wear and tear, on parts that he said should be as smooth as anything, meant it was a throw away.

Also,
He showed me the water pump.
The fan thing had been hammering against the side of the 'tunnel' there was hugeish damage there, He said it was one of the most vital areas in the cooling system, and it was obviously a huge part of the earlier problem.

Also where the two 'U' bolts attatch to the 'thing' where the transmission is, on the right it was rather loose, a bearing had gone there. And on this whole houseing case, these attatchement bolts had been hammering into the housing. THere were massive grooves in the side of the houseing, So he was going to rub some special crack sealer on it just to be safe.

Also (its the flywheel? that the starter motor hammers into isnt it?)
Well on the grooves on the flywheel, the starter motor has rounded off many of the grooves, so that it is likely that the starter motor has been getting caught while the motor has been on, which i think is true, which isnt good.
There was enough on the grooves for him to just file off the rough edges so a 'new' one isnt needed.

Also, he showed me the clutch, also 99% cheesecaked.

Well maybe thats not much

But it seemed the list was endless, BWAHAHAHA, it seems a lot to me with what else i had been told before.

So i need new oil and water pumps, a few new bearings, maybe the crankshaft is a throw away, maybe it will be fine, (they dont know yet) definately a new clutch, and ill get a radiator job done aswell.

However, he did say the gearbox looked good, All the teeth were nice, no damage, and no looseness in there, so that was a bonus

The deal now is, he will wait for the motor builders to get back to him with the full list of to do things, And a list for all the parts with prices, The local mechanic is going to look up prices for all the parts as well,
And then he is going to give me the list, and see if i can beat the total price by anything worthwhile, and then i will provide the parts, and they can complete.

Either that, or it definately is a throw away job  :x :!:

Its annoying,
No idea on $$$$
Im going to get the list that the local mechanic will fix (rad, pumps and bearings and fiddling)
And the List from the engine rebuilders,
And then i will try to beat their prices with the use of you blokes :P
The clutch kit i got a quote from Karcraft was about 35 bucks cheaper than locally.
so if i get a few things in the sam parcel, it may be worth doing it that way

I guess this story just goes to show the mini just lives for ever (almost) if this had been any other car it would have been broken down on the side of the road years ago.

GO MINI!

Mate I am in the same boat, I am isolated and in the scrub and totally reliant on information given to me by mechanics but none of them are mini mechanics - in fact our local mechanic has never seen one let alone worked on one.

Firstly, yes minis blow head gaskets for a couple of reasons. The heads warp, the block warps etc. Its a 80,000 km phenomenom. Quick fix is get the head skimmed, whack in new valve guides and even hardened valve seats(unleaded petrol) ($200 max at any machine shop).

A full rebuild - yea great - it certainly works and i have just had a motor built by a local regional engine builder for about a $1,000. But.. In your case is it neccessary. Your engine sounds finds and looks fine in the photos. Plenty of apparent life. Pity you are paying for labour. )
Try a head rebuild and assembly and go for the next big rebuild as and when you can afford it - dont be forced into a now rebuild. coz you can guarantee there will be short cuts. .

Build the perfect motor with deep breathes and breathing space. You may well find the mini goes for two or three years without a hitch with just a head recon.

Water and Oil pumps..yer that happens and best to change them if a little sus

Crank..well he needs to Crack test it and check the measurments on it, to see if its any good. If its cracked toss it and ask around here for another one. With the Measurments this where the bearings go and the bearings will suit the measurments of the grind. Once again thier are maximum they can go to.

Looks like you need new Uni Joints..can be a little costley..The U shaped bolts

gearbox..that is excellent  that could have been costly

Oil and water pump and Uni's..check with normal places for price and Avalible

poor camel!

but the thing to realise also is that you are rebuilding the motor!

So you would def want to replace the oil pump, get the crank ground
and replace the water pump (provided it was suspect) I say do it
all now, get those things that can let go replaced and have a motor that you
can then look after and preserve them as best as possible!!

good luck with it all!!

Dam that is bad news Camel and sorry to hear this..

But as others have said if you get a full rebuild then you know that it is right and it will last you for many years to come.

Such a shame though that you cannot do some of the work yourself to save you some dollars..

But either way I hope it all works out for you :)..

I went to mechanic yesterday

to get my toolbox out of the mini's boot.

And i reminded the guy that he was meant to be getting the fax of prices through that day.

Today passed, and nothing :( :!:
