I have a replacement head gasket all ready to go on after cleaning the head and block up.

One side is metal, other side is a softish type texture.

Which way faces upwards ?

Other gaskets I have had had text telling which way was supposed to be at the front and left, but this one doesnt have anything on it whatsoever.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanx!

I'm pretty sure the correct way is the hard side up.... the gasket is working on the 998 I did a couple of weeks ago, and it's hard side up...

H0nk, try twisting the hoses before pulling, that'll crack the seal, then if they're still hard, gently lever with a screwdriver - GENTLY... ;)

yeah it is a mirror image - it took me ages to decide which way up to put it, in the end I thought back to whether I had to scrape the block or the head clean of the old gasket - it was the block... soft side down

all these so called bloody experts and not one has given you the right info.

its like a piece of toast, isnt it?

put jam on the headgasket, throw it in the air , when it lands jam side down , you know that that side should face up.

HUH! AND PEOPLE SAY THAT I HAVE NO MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE! PHU!

Have you had a close look? they're usually labelled 'TOP'...

and `FRONT'... (might be, if was on a Morris Minor..)
With newer composition ones as Con the Fruiterer would say `dus'n matter'- the thing is symmetrical and will seal either way up. I've taken lots off where the PO couldn't read `top' or `front'...

surely you cant get the front wrong..you would not be able to get it over the studs :!:
When I used the copper one's on the 1100 it always had top, but then I changed to a differnt (acl) gasket and always found the shinney side was down..but if its mirrored..should not matter, you have it on the correct way up
