Hey there...

I'm in the middle of doing up my mini, and after bleeding the brakes several times, the pedal still feels spongy.

I've noticed that bubbles appear in the reservoir if i pump the pedal a couple of times. (i left it a day between noticing the bubbles and bleeding to get rid of them)


Does the master cylinder need overhauling? if so, the master cylinder matches none of the pictures i've seen in books/on the web... which repair kit do i need?

Hi Si, welcome to ausmini.

I can't tell from the photos if it is stuffed or not, but highly suggest either fitting a new
cylinder or reconditioned one. You don't want to finish the project and have
something go wrong later.

Looks like its been there a while, if the rust on the nut is any indication.

Have you checked for leaky wheel cylinders? They can let air back in, and as the master cylinder is at the top, thats where you will eventually see it. Check them, too.

I've put a new set of wheel cylinders, hoses and a new pressure limiting valve. The rear pipes are fine, though i havent taken the front ones off to check them.

Nah, we don't get too formal round here.
Just put a pic of your car in the gallery and you're in.

I'd be taking off the Master, and getting it Stainless Steel sleeved at the same time.

That way, it will never need to be rebuilt again. Well worth the hassle.

Just have 'fun' removing the pin from the MC under the dashboard One of the worst jobs on a Mini. Throw away the split pins, and put some 'R' clips back in. much easier. If you can, get a new clevice pin, too. This takes away much of the slop in the pedal-to-master.

if you do decide to rekit the MC get a quite first and compare that with a new MC. could be cheaper.... businesses that sell are listed in the how to section

additional to the Wheel Cylinders..that you have replaced a another place to check for leakage is on the Pedal..Some time if the the Master Cylinder is leaking it will run down the Brake pedal
