Well, currently my mini is undergoing the "all over the place" sindrome. ie. Parts are all over my garage whilst I'm stripping and restoring the shell. When I got my mini, it was too far taken apart to test, and I didn't see the point it add a few bit and a battery to test it. So, what do I need to do to hook it up and just "bench test" it. I just wanna see that it goes, also give me a bit of motivation.:D

Currently, the engine is in the original hydro subframe, with most parts attached, I need to sort the carb out, but what about electrics to get it started. I have the workshop manual (aka black book or something). I think I have a rough idea, connnect all needed electrics, connect battery, get some fuel into the carb, make sure its in neutral etc. Main problem being I don't know what electrics I need and which way to hook them up.

personally I would just take the head off and have a lookie inside. Quicker than fluffing around trying to start a motor that isn't hooked up to much.

Here's how I do it:
1. leave ALL the wires off the alternator.
2. hook a wire from the solenoid's battery cable terminal to + on the coil.
3. Hook up some fuel- if no fuel pump on motor, I gravity feed from an olive oil tin.. :P
4. Hook up the battery with jumper leads: + to solenoid, - to block. Mine are welding cables.. 8)
5. If motor is in subframe sit it all level, tie some rope on it if needed.
6. watch there's nothing behind/below the motor that can burn.
7. flash a spanner across the big solenoid terminals to spin it over.
8. When you want to stop it pull the jumper lead off.

If you have radiator on and water in, you can run it a while. If not, stop it after 5 minutes max.

Awesome, just a few things:

2. hook a wire from the solenoid's battery cable terminal to + on the coil.
4. Hook up the battery with jumper leads: + to solenoid, - to block. Mine are welding cables.. Cool
7. flash a spanner across the big solenoid terminals to spin it over.

2&3 - What's the solenoid?
7 - Flash mean short the big terminals together?

Solenoid is the square switch on the flywheel housing or back of block, where the starter and battery cables goes to.

Flash means just stick a spanner or big screwdriver on there to short the 2 terminals. This will spin the starter.
If you want to do it in a more genteel manner, hook another bit of wire under the big nut, and touch it on the spade terminal on the side of solenoid where the white/red wire was. This will also spin the starter.
