Here's how I do it:
1. leave ALL the wires off the alternator.
2. hook a wire from the solenoid's battery cable terminal to + on the coil.
3. Hook up some fuel- if no fuel pump on motor, I gravity feed from an olive oil tin..
4. Hook up the battery with jumper leads: + to solenoid, - to block. Mine are welding cables..
5. If motor is in subframe sit it all level, tie some rope on it if needed.
6. watch there's nothing behind/below the motor that can burn.
7. flash a spanner across the big solenoid terminals to spin it over.
8. When you want to stop it pull the jumper lead off.
If you have radiator on and water in, you can run it a while. If not, stop it after 5 minutes max.
