okay
the swarf on the sump plug pretty much all comes from the gearbox i reckon, doing burnouts wears the diff and crunching gearchanges or slow synchros etc (courtesy of willy's hooning lol)
.
if you change the oil every 3000 kms and your motor is reasonably fresh you wont have this much swarf, but if its been around the clock a few times its normal.
okay come back to it after 30 mins, put the sump plug back in, turning clockwise also being very careful not to tighten it too much, as its quite easy to strip the thread!!!
here is the spin on type oil filter, luckily for me, willy or whoever serviced it last, greased the seal and didnt over tighten it, and i was able to undo it by hand!
if you cant undo it by hand, and you don't have a special tool, pierce the filter with a screwdriver and turn it with that, being careful not to damage the oil filter head mind you. This step is always messy, you can't avoid it really.. gloves help if you like your nails.
OH and looking from above, turn it clockwise to loosen it, which will be anti clockwise looking at it from below.
i bought the filter from supercrap on special, but these won't be more than $10-$15
heres the replacement, be sure to remove any plastic sealing on the filter
then put some oil in it, and smear some along the rubber seal.. refit the filter in the reverse manner..
you'll wanna use any cheap mineral based 50w or 60w oil in your mini, not synthetic oil.
put 4 litres or so in like this, leave it for a few mins, then check the level on the dipstick, fill till its like this
somewhere inbetween min and max where it says 1 pint, leaning towards the max side.
put the old oil into a sealed container, it can be disposed of at any local garage or service station that will take it, or ask your local council.
(or save it for when oil is worth more than gold)
while we're here, fill the radiator, water is perfectly fine, but a cheap coolant for old cars (pre 1984 or sommit like that) is recommended, not the expensive anti freeze stuff for modern cars though.
put oil in the dashpot, not all the way up to the top though, you can use "household oil" if you have nothing else or brake fluid (which is messy), but not a combination of both i would think.
top up the master cylinders , these are for the brakes and clutch, use brake fluid for both, which can be purchased at any auto store, service station or supermarket for like $7 or sommit.
finally make a note of the kms, and service it again in 3000kms or 3-4 months
the speedo in a lmini will not read hundreds, so my mini reads 17,248kms and about 100metres
in a morris mini, its in miles.
you'll wanna check your oil levels weekly or every 2 weeks along with your radiator.
minis tend to use a fair bit of oil between oil changes and the oil is also shared with the gearbox, so make sure you buy two bottles of oil, check the level and remember to service it regularly..
i think a lot of people don't bother to service minis as they were so cheap to buy in the first place, and i think thats why a lot of minis aren't reliable.
check your dashpot and master cylinders every month or 2.
also, every two oil changes or so, change your paper air filter or clean and re-oil it if its an oiled filter.
