15/16 (24mm) socket, rags, oil, filter, a jack is handy but not required if your mini sits at a more standard height.

Image

Image

oil catch bucket from supercrap for like 5 bucks.

Image

loosen the sump plug with a socket or ring spanner, put a towel or soft rags on your arm as you do it, you turn the sump plug anti clockwise which requires you to pull towards the top of the car, then use your fingers so you don't lose the sump plug.

Image

drain the oil, leave it for 30 mins

Image

if the oil hasnt been changed in awhile, this is what the sump plug magnet will look like..
the oil will also be black and smell burnt.

Looks like you have got problems in your engine.

My Sump plug has never in the life of ten years that I have owned it ever look like that.

Mine you I always change my oil evey 3000 km or 6 months which ever is first.

How about adding:

Oil :P (or is that bit coming)
Oil change intervals
recomended oil types
some stuff about changing oil filters (how to do it and what to get them off with)
and importantly smeer the rubber seal with oil.
fill in a sticker so you know when to do the next one.
How much oil the mini should take.
A bit about if someone has the old paper oil filter thingies and doesn't know what to do about it.

All I though of so far something I have missed for sure

okay
the swarf on the sump plug pretty much all comes from the gearbox i reckon, doing burnouts wears the diff and crunching gearchanges or slow synchros etc (courtesy of willy's hooning lol)
.
if you change the oil every 3000 kms and your motor is reasonably fresh you wont have this much swarf, but if its been around the clock a few times its normal.

Image

okay come back to it after 30 mins, put the sump plug back in, turning clockwise also being very careful not to tighten it too much, as its quite easy to strip the thread!!!

Image

here is the spin on type oil filter, luckily for me, willy or whoever serviced it last, greased the seal and didnt over tighten it, and i was able to undo it by hand!
if you cant undo it by hand, and you don't have a special tool, pierce the filter with a screwdriver and turn it with that, being careful not to damage the oil filter head mind you. This step is always messy, you can't avoid it really.. gloves help if you like your nails.
OH and looking from above, turn it clockwise to loosen it, which will be anti clockwise looking at it from below.
i bought the filter from supercrap on special, but these won't be more than $10-$15

Image
heres the replacement, be sure to remove any plastic sealing on the filter

Image
then put some oil in it, and smear some along the rubber seal.. refit the filter in the reverse manner..

Image
you'll wanna use any cheap mineral based 50w or 60w oil in your mini, not synthetic oil.

put 4 litres or so in like this, leave it for a few mins, then check the level on the dipstick, fill till its like this

Image

somewhere inbetween min and max where it says 1 pint, leaning towards the max side.

Image

put the old oil into a sealed container, it can be disposed of at any local garage or service station that will take it, or ask your local council.
(or save it for when oil is worth more than gold)

Image

while we're here, fill the radiator, water is perfectly fine, but a cheap coolant for old cars (pre 1984 or sommit like that) is recommended, not the expensive anti freeze stuff for modern cars though.

Image

put oil in the dashpot, not all the way up to the top though, you can use "household oil" if you have nothing else or brake fluid (which is messy), but not a combination of both i would think.

Image

top up the master cylinders , these are for the brakes and clutch, use brake fluid for both, which can be purchased at any auto store, service station or supermarket for like $7 or sommit.

Image

finally make a note of the kms, and service it again in 3000kms or 3-4 months
the speedo in a lmini will not read hundreds, so my mini reads 17,248kms and about 100metres
in a morris mini, its in miles.

you'll wanna check your oil levels weekly or every 2 weeks along with your radiator.
minis tend to use a fair bit of oil between oil changes and the oil is also shared with the gearbox, so make sure you buy two bottles of oil, check the level and remember to service it regularly..

i think a lot of people don't bother to service minis as they were so cheap to buy in the first place, and i think thats why a lot of minis aren't reliable.

check your dashpot and master cylinders every month or 2.

also, every two oil changes or so, change your paper air filter or clean and re-oil it if its an oiled filter.

Good stuff Spaceboy, hat's off to you for taking the time to do it and share your knowledge with us. 8)
It was in TME, however due to not having to cram it all on one page, Spaceboy's photos tell the complete story. Cheers,

yep all my minis before this one have had cartridge type oil filter assemblies..
its easier to undo the filter case, but you have to clean it and renew the rubber washers etc if need which takes awhile.. oh and getting the little rubber seal thing on properly is a pain sometimes i left it off cos i cbf.

well just get standard brake fluid, the cheaper stuff, valvoline or mobil or whatever.. and yer the clutch uses the same stuff as the brakes.

there is a fill line on the see through ones, but the smaller tin ones i dont think have? but i just make sure they've got plenty in them.

Something tells me that I'm going to have problems getting the oil filter off.

Image

That same thing tells me there's going to be a lot of metal in the oil sump.

Thanks for the directions, spaceboy, they're really helpful to a mini-newb.

 , look on the bright side, at least you now have plenty of room to wrestle with it.
