Not quite watto

willy's is a 1300 auto it has the same body and everything else as a 1500 but uses the 1275 engine and an auto gearbox

I always thought the landcrab was a 1800 :D

Apparently not all of the 1500s were 5 speed either some had 4 speeds.

http://www.elevenhundred.com/morris1500/index.php for more info

Err, guys, the pics are of a Morris 1500.

They are nice pics too, but I should point out that the 1300 uses the 1275 (1100S motor in Australia) A Series engine, whereas the 1500 has a 1500cc overhead cam engine (I don't know the series type.) and five-speed gearbox with cable operated gear-change.

The Land Crab, as it is affectionately known, is the Austin 1800, which uses a B Series engine - like the MGB (for the Mk2 anyway).

The front grille is quite different on the 1500, whereas the 1300 and 1100 are very similar - and IMHO much better looking. Easiest way to tell the 1100 and 1300 apart is the taillights - 1300s are flat. Also, as stated, in Australia it would be an 1100 S, not a 1300.

So, the 1100 and 1100 S are both closely related to the Mini, kind of a big Mini with 4 doors (a Biggi perhaps?), whereas the 1500 and 1800 are quite far removed from the Mini/1100 concept, despite the initial similarity in appearances.

Here endeth the lesson.

Cheers, Watto.

Ah, there you go.....you learn somthing new every day.

So, it is a 1300 in a 1500 body shell. Is the engine still the same trusty old 1275cc A Series?

Certainly not a Land Crab though!

Cheers, Watto.

My appologies, but with a bit of speed it would have similar handling as the crab.

Is the Morris 1500 engine interchangable with the Mini?

From the above website:

Quote:
and the manual transmission models would be powered by the new 1.5 litre OHC E-series engine and cable gearbox developed for the British Austin Maxi.

So I take it the E series is a redesigned engine and quite different to the A Series.

Another quote:

Quote:
The end of the road. A stock pile of 2,100 cars is left to clear pending the arrival of the new Morris Marina, which will inherit the E-series engine.

So the E series was I think originally designed for the Marina and the 1300 and 1500 were stop gaps to hold Morris sales up until the Marina came into being.

The E-series engine was developed for the Austin Maxi.
Leyland Australia thought it would be a good engine for Australia and took it and developed it. It was made in four different sizes. 1500 and 1750 four cylinders and 2250 and 2623 6 cylinders.
In Australia the E-series was fitted to the Morris 1500, Austin Kimberley/Tasman, Morris Marina and the P76.

You would not bother fitting a 1500 to a mini as it is a big heavy tall engine. (you might fit a 1750 though!) 8)

I know two people who have fitted the 1500 with cable operated five-speed to Mokes, so I guess it is do-able.

Cheers, Watto

a while ago ( like 2 or 3 yrs) there was a mini subframe modded for a 1500 e series engine for sale on mini car club site. also a side note there is a 6 cyl e series cross sectioned at goulburn tafe in the light auto section if you ever get the chance to have a look .
