Towards the end of the dim, dark ages of Lucas sealed beam headlights, a couple of French companies, Cibie and Marchal led the way forward with twin globe and twin reflector 7" halogen lights called 'Biodes'.
They were basically a normal halogen low beam light housing within it a smaller high beam driving light. They were all the go for rally cars and still a damn good light. I don't know if they are still available new, but they are worth grabbing if you find a set.
The ones fitted here are Marchal.

I may be wrong..

One source..:
"The internal quartz arc tube temperature is probably typically around 800 degrees C (1400-1500 degrees F or so). The outer bulb is not this hot, but it is definitely burning hot. The arc tube always has at least some miniscule risk of exploding and should only be operated in a headlight housing or other suitable container. Improper operation increases the risk of bulb explosion."

Taken from here:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=question387.htm&url=http://www.misty.com/~don/d2.html

But also:
"HID lights actually produce significantly less heat than standard bulbs. These lights can be left on for extended periods of time and not cause problems."

Can never be too bright, sounds like it's either angled wrong or wired wrong and is always on highbeam..?

True HID lights require a tranformer as they run 32-36V
Also by law, a vehicle with HID lights must have automatic self levelling
(only found in big, expensive cars like BMW, Merc, etc)

Might be a stupid question, but the new convertible has headlights with 2x on them. What are they..?? Double strength headlights?

I have a set of H4's in the garage. They are going on the Clubby when she gets on the road.
