there are some great people in both clubs, hotbricks was created from a dispute with members within miniclub like 20 or 30 years ago and there is some rivalry between the clubs though most of the people from back then are gone.

i enjoy the laid back atmosphere of hotbricks, especially the informal cruises which are always enjoyable and well run. Some members and former members take things way too seriously and there are some seriously grumpy old farts.

on the other hand
mini club sa is more formal and politically correct : they run their cruises through cams.
and they can seem to be a bit cliquey and have a tight knit group of regulars with a large contingent of members who join for historic rego and nothing else.

both clubs are regularly involved with various forms of motorsport including
mainly motorkhanas and also sprints, road rallies, historic touring car, hillclimb, and improved production.

i'd say hotbricks tends to have more extremely modified minis, hence the name.
Some such cars have and currently include a toyota starlet powered mini, turbo mokes, supercharged saloons etc, and there is a wealth of engineering knowledge to be shared.

hotbricks is associated with "morris mania" which is run by one of hotbricks more obvious members
and
miniclub is close with "minitech motors" with its previous owner being a member.

both clubs run an annual show,
originally there was only one show, which miniclub didnt want to run anymore so gave it to hotbricks to run, hotbricks turned this into minis at the mill. after awhile mini club decided to run the event again and this is called minis at the bay
and thats why theres 2.

minis at the mill has an entry fee of $10 or something, which also includes entry to the national motor museum where the last mini made in australia sits in mint condition,
minis at the bay is free and open to the public, being at wigley reserve at glenelg within walking distance of all the shops and pubs etc.

minis at the mill has usually had a better turnout, but in 2006 minis at the bay also had a huge turnout.

in addition a lot of BINIs came, which miniclub are strongly focusing on at the moment, bringing BINI drivers into their club and on the cruises.
A few hotbricks members also regularly compete in BINI's.

the miniclub also always runs the "Hay mini nationals" every year (except for one year i think) , which includes a show and shine and a dirt motorkhana event which controversially allowed non minis to score points but now still allows non minis to compete and win trophies!! but not score any points to the overall winners trophy presented to the club with the most points scored across the "classes" which include 1275, 1100, 998 and overall placings.

Qoute "hotbricks was created from a dispute with members within miniclub like 20 or 30 years ago "

This is not quite accurate. I should know. I created the club.

The club was tilted The Modified Mini Club of SA. Hotbricks was a nickname dreamed up by the co-creator and immortalised in that stylised Mini cartoon emblem.

The club was conceived from a chance meeting between two Cooper S owners late one night in Rundle Street (in the days when you could actually drive down it) in November 1972. Neither of us were members of the Mini 850 Club (as SA Mini Club was called then) or any other club.

We both knew lots of lads with hot Minis who were into street cruising, fast driving (Mini style) and modifying their cars to see who could come up with the top looking Mini in town. The club grew out of our informal get togethers.

The groundwork for creating a new Minis only club where the emphasis was on modifying Minis was done over Christmas 1972. The first meeting - a run to Moana Beach - was held in Jan 1973 and attracted about 30 Minis, many of them Coopers. I have a photo of them all lined up in Taylors of Medindie (then a BL dealer) forecourt. I've also got the first Hotbricks tee shirt and issue #1 of its newletter.

The first meeting to elect a committee was held in a flat at West Beach - so many people turned up we had to hold it outside. The club blossomed from there. The Mini 850 Club shunned us and would not allow us to compete at Hay, claiming we were all a lot of tearabouts who defamed the name of the Mini. We went along anyway and mingled with the interstate guys.

thanks, i had a different idea from what i had heard at hotbricks meetings and i obviously misunderstood.

there is still undoubtedly a sneaky rivalry between the clubs today as they try to out-do each other. :D

interestingly, today the adelaide ausmini guys have made a bit of a bad name for themselves with the mini clubs with their (our) agressive cruising

would love to see any pictures if you can scan them in or something!

you also pointed out a big thing about mini club sa, and that is they allow competition with non minis, and you can join the mini club and race a mitsubishi or subaru or whatever. But yeah they're very tolerant like that, i personally loathe the idea of non minis competing at the "mini nationals" but its their event to run i guess.

hotbricks only allows members with a mini or mini derivitave, and there has been a bit of conflict lately about things like specials and hybrid minis and whether they are
"mini enough"

At the 2002 & 2003 Australian Motorkhana Championships a Hotbricks member competed in a WRX Impreza, and the current club president (as i belive) was there running in the event too, i bit ironic really.

I just don't get all the agro about non mini vechicles competing at Hay, the event is not about the mini, its about the people who make the event great.

I've even heard things like members of Hotbricks being banned from going to Mini Club SA events.

When i was in Hotbricks, there were other members that competed in non-mini's....however they did it under other club's banners......such as sporting car club, or nissan/datsun car club etc.......

I'm not sure how I would like the idea of people competing in non-minis at a Mini national.
Though at the Firebird/GTO Nats, they let Le Mans run down the strip, probably because they're the same body as the GTO :?

What about having ausmini meetings? I'm shy enough as it is without rocking up to a hotbricks or SA mini meeting without knowing anyone

Just show up at the club meetings and announce "I know Chuck Norris", that should do the trick.
