If you are just replacing the switch,
Astro will still have it's original solenoid :?

Even 850s with a generator had solenoids, didn't they?

Aha!... that's why i kept asking... i don't have a solenoid :)

but doesn't the relay act as a solenoid?

No solenoid was ever in my 850 van.
Cush do you currently have the original 850 starter on the floor near the drivers seat? It needs a fair bit of force to push?

yep.. that's why i thought about changing it :)

Cush, the standard starter button that you have on the floor is capable of handling the power from the battery to the starter. A 30 amp relay will not take the 400 or so amps that the starter draws.

You will need to fit a solenoid instead of the relay and then you can run your silly starter button to it. 8)

What amperage do i need for the starter circuit? Is it 20A or 30A?

:)

the button IS a low amp (<10A) button....

I so need to go... button, relay, solenoid, starter?

Yep.

Unless you think your shiny button can handle activating the solenoid
(doesn't sound like it would last long at that duty)

Sorry, I thought you had a solenoid. What year is Astro?

button -> solenoid -> starter... no need for a relay

what you're doing is going half way to converting your car from a push button start to a key start... instead of the key you're putting a fancy button on the floor.

steps to follow - I just don't remember how the main +'ve gets to the ignition switch, doesn't matter much...

get a solenoid off off a clubman or whatever, and mount it in the engine bay near the starter motor

take the existing big power lead off the starter motor and put it on one side of the solenoid, and run a short cable from the other side to the starter motor

pull out the existing floor button, connect the 2 bits of fat wire together and wrap tape around them, and secure them to the underside of the floor somehow

mount your fancy button whereever the hell you want it, and run a power (from ignition or permanent +'ve) wire to one side of it, then from the other side to the spade connector on the side of the soleniod

push the button

Oooh yeah...

Mount the WHOLE thing on the dash. That'd confuse everybody..... and make starting the car when youre drunk a whole lot easier.

Or use it as a horn button...... a horn that goes "bip.. bip.. bip.. bip.. bip.. DIIIIIUUUUW di di di di di di"

Doesnt matter - your ignition switch on any later mini is a flimsy 30yr old item and it handles the same duty just fine. The starter solenoid is just another type of relay so the current to activate is is no bigger than that drawn by any other relay. The ign. circuit is isolated from the starter circuit so your button will be dealing with a very small amperage (just put a 5amp fuse on it if youre afraid and see what happens).

Your car probably currently has no ignition wire from the cabin to the engine (only a high tension wire to the switch and from there to the motor. You will need a high tension wire from the battery to the new starter solenoid in the engine bay and a high tension wire from the solenoid to the starter motor. make sure you disconnect any now unused wiring to the old starter switch (actualy disconect them from circuit not just from the switch or remove them otherwise you'll have a direct +12v from the battery banging about under your carpet waiting to short out and start a fire.
