I have a problem...
i dont know what gearbox is in my 72 clubman. i need to find out what box is in it so i can source a replacement for it.
any help would be appreciated.

if you have to lift for reverse its a rod change, otherwise look under the car, if it has two rods its a rod change

if it has a large metal casing, its a remote change.. also remote changes will rattle like all hell :wink:

hey spaceboy,
box is much like any gearbox in a conventional car (aka. dont have to lift to put in reverse.) and by large metal casing do you mean at the floor and approx. 10cm diameter?

you have to look under the car,

but yeah you can take off your rubber gearlever boot and if you only have to twist and push to take the gearlever out its a rod change, if you need tools to get it apart its a remote change.

rod change is clearly the superior setup, being used on all minis from the 70's on. having no vibration and a lockout for reverse, and easier to install, uninstall, less wear etc.

remote change is better for racing, as it acts like a strong engine steady, and has a more direct feel, most would say a superior feel. :wink:

Remote was an engineered solution (by John Cooper, esq),
Rod change was an agricultural solution that helped BL avoid paying him £2 per car royalty... :lol:

Myth. :lol:
I doubt it. The remote shift is just an improved version of the Morris 1100 shift. They wouldn't have to pay Cooper for something that they designed themselves. :wink:
John Cooper never engineered anything. I don't think that there were any engineers at Cooper. 8)
