After having a look at Mr Moke's fantastic mini ute does anyone know how many are in oz and how hard are they to find and does anyone have any other good pick of them?

i think my next project maybe one of them (if i could ever find one) :?

Peanut i think you will find that most utes are cut down from vans, there are very very few real utes here.

I know h0nk (Alex), Dean Canto, Pickup1(you have probably seen it at MATM) , I think Gordo on here have them but none are the genuine article.

If Mr Mokes' is a real ute then I would guess that he has one of maybe 5 in the country (that is purely a guess but i would assume that you could count them on one hand)

Best of luck with the future project!

PS I have lots of pics that i will post up later

Matt

Mini ute was never made or sold here. There are a handful of UK ones here that were brought in privately.

Cutting a van down is more common, but if you are long legged, beware- there isn't much legroom in any Mini `ute' and you can't just shove the seat further back like other Minis....

From memory I think about a dozen or so real bodies were imported by Mini Kingdom or the mini Factory, they were just bodies with no mechanicals or trim and most ended up being built in Sydney

Yeah that’s what I thought but had to ask the question.

Leg room is no problem as I’m not the tallest guy around.

Could you find one in the UK and import it or do the new import laws make that hard and/or impossible?

I wouldn’t want to cut a van down as they are hard enough to find too.

Wouldn't be a problem to import as I think they stopped making them in the early 80s and as long as its pre Jan 89 no probs and if you can get a pre 76 no duty payable :D

I like the olive green LHD Austin ute - very neat.

Dean Canto's ute is a genuine UK ute, but it does have an Aussie Clubman front end on it. The front was damaged when something was dropped on it, so the change was made, just to be different. I reckon it looks really good.

Dean's ute was bought by his dad Rocky with another ute, from the five that John Smidt imported when he owned Mini Kingdom. We had a full feature on Dean's ute in Issue 3 of The Mini Experience.

Ken Wenham's ute (Pickup1) in Adelaide also started out as a genuine ute, but had some serious body repairs, including a cut+shut front from an Aussie Mini de Luxe. (Issue 3)

I would guestimate there are around a dozen or so genuine utes in the country, from those I've seen, maybe a few more, but I would doubt there would be as many as 20. The easiest way to pick a genuine ute is the shape of the back of the tray. If it is flat perpendicular, then it is a genuine ute. A cut down van slopes forward slightly - and I personally reckon it looks better, but each to their own. The ute also has unique taillights, similar to, but diffrent from, the van's.

In Issue 8, coming out in about a week, we've got a feature on a LHD 1960 ute, which is cureently in the Canberra region.

Cheers,
Watto.

There's a guy in Sydney named Peter Jenning's, he has a fantastic Yellow mini ute which is one of the utes that Smidty bought in at mini kingdom, it makes me drool ever time i see it.
