Hi there can someone help me...?

My 1974 mini 1100 is spitting oil from the dip stick, i have recently put this motor in. It is not over filled... it just keeps running out of the dip stick but it still runs fine, well at the moment it does. Does this mean that the motor is f***ed or is there a way to fix it?

Is it coming from the dipstick or from around the dipstick tube? If it's the dipstick do you have a rubber cap at the top of the stick? If it's a loose tube I found gasket goo sealed it pretty well.

I always thought that one way to determine if the rings are shot was to put your finger over the dipstick tube and if there was strongish pressure then gas was getting passed the rings? Could this be it?

Well when I got my Mini It was doing that. I saw that when i lifted the dipstick the Ouil was spitting out of it. I found that when I dismanlted the motor that there was a broken ring which was causing excess pressure/blow by into the sump and making it spit the oil out of the dip stick.

Also make sure your oil breather are not clogg and are connected up correctly.

I think u may be right... Nothing is blocked checked that out.

The owner of the motor before me had not long put new rings and all in it but then she crashed it thats how i got the motor, it was hit fairly hard in the front but the motor would still start and sounded fine, could this of caused the problem?

it's about the biggest job on a mini, remove and dismantle the motor, check, reassemble and refit..... first thing is get a compression test done on it, if the motor was recently professionally rebuilt for your friend, perhaps you can get it sorted under warranty?

Dont Panic. It's probably just crank case pressure blowing a bit of oil out the dipstick hole.

First of all just make sure you actually have a plastic tube or sleave in the dipstick hole. If there is not plastic tube it allows oil to quirt out the whole. Think of the spill proof lid on a bottle of liquid paper or nail polish to see what I mean. I had this problem for ages and I was told it was probably piston blow by etc etc. I just replaced the plastic sleave and then held the dip stck in with a spring and opened up my crank case breather. It fixed the problem. When we pulled the engine apart for another reason we found nothing wrong with the pistons or rings, just excessive crank case pressure.

Get a mechanic to do a compression test.

Cheers... U sound like u know what u r talking about. Ill get that checked out right away, u might just of saved me some dollars... Thanks let u know how i go...

Also make sure that if you have that plastic sleeve (and they are bloody hard to find if yours is brocken \ missing) that it sits tigtly in the hole and doesnt come out easily or is pulled out with your dipstick. If its loose use some gasketing compound or some sikaflex adhesive around it to fix it in let it dry a bit before you press it into the hole (just be bloody careful to apply everything only at the top of the tube and not to drop\drip any compound into the sump).

And to remedy any excessive cranckase pressure get a second breather atr the back or a rocker cover with a breather if you dont already have one and make sure that the other breather is not blocked (if you have the smiths pcv valve - its a flat saucer looking thing between your breather and manifold - that its too is working).

LOL, Not me - if anyone knows little about minis it's me :lol:

I can only relate to the problems I have had in the past but I have been sent into a panic with two minis with people saying oooooo oil out the dipstik = stuffed rings.

One thing I have done is pull the baffled breather off the crank (Is that what it's called?) Its the one off the crank case that looks like it has a silencer on it. Take that off and Remove anything from the baffle area and clean it right out, then you can put a bit of steel wool into it so the engine can breath but oil will not squirt out. (Use a corse scourer so it not going to block up the breather when it gets covered in oil). On my last car I just removed everything and had an unobstructed breather running to an overflow bottle. After you have checked the breather, fit a filter on the end. if it allready has one clean it and re oil it or just put a hose on it and plumb it into a overflow bottle (make sure the presure going into the bottle has somewhere to escape i.e plenty of outlet pipes).

I just remembered something else. Everytime I raced my last mini the overflow tank would fill with oil every 10 laps (1.5 Ltrs). We pulled all the breathers off and from memory put a small plate with lots of holes in it over the crank case breather hole to stop the steel wool falling into the crank case, then put a bit iof steel wool in the baffle and plumbed it into the overflow bottle and it cured it instantly.

OR BETTER STILL JUST ASK DR MINI HE TOUGHT ME EVERYTHING I KNOW.

But check the plastic sleeve first..
