The bloke i bought a 1275 in a clubman for 200,reaches beyond 8000rpm..Tacho only goes to 8000. Its running a single s.u carb ..I am totally stoked love to see whats been done to it...My question is its a block with no tappet covers [non s ] and he reckons its got nitrided cooper s crank in it!! so do cooper 's' cranks fit that type of motor e.g.are journal sizes the same??? or is there large and small main journals for both types of motors??? Thanks for any info

Dude, there's a switch on the back of the tacho.
Change it to '4 cyl' instead of 6 or 8.
:D

S Crank will fit an 1100S block asfaik - it would have to have an S crank to reach that RPM.

Dr. Mini's 1360 reaches beyond 8000rpm - that's about where it peaked on the dyno 8)

Not too many mini's i've seen that rev that high comfortably though - would need alot of intake/head work to breathe that well :)

Wouldn't want to keep taking it there either -

For $200 though...

I'M only going on what the tacho read, The guy that built the motor says its a quater race cam, ported +polished head, and he used to race mini's at wanaroo.. I'll have to try another tacho and see what it does must be r.s., I spose if some of you bloke s could see what it does you'd be asking questions to.. T o the bloke who hasn't seen to many mini motors rev past 8000 rpm why do they make tacho's go to 10,000rpm? must be piontless they'd be redlining about 8000

Tacho's beyond 10,000 are good for a over enthusiastic rotary driver.

10 a nice round number

Pointless redline??? My old 1275 started its redline at 5.5 and went out to 8K, was it pointless to have the tacho to 8K no because that how they're manufactured and sent to factory like. Just cause a tacho has a number on like 10k doesn't mean the engine can or should be taken to that point. But hey if you want to ruin a cheap worked up 1275 go ahead and blew it up.

And for conventional motors, you need to see at what revs it dismantles, just in case it makes 8K

Ok...FULL race motor's don't rev much beyond 8,000rpm certainly not past 9,000rpm reliably

They have a 3 bearing crank with 1950's technology.

Regardless there simply isn't much more power beyond that with a 5port head. And even if it did make more power - it's only as good as what the bottom end can take.

10,000rpm? wtf did that come from? they make tacho's to 15,000rpm too - does that mean we should all be driving around in our 40yo car's at balistic revs?

And where does the 10,000rpm tacho/8,000rpm redline come from? redline is a factory guided number - there is no redline once you modify the motor to go past what it was originally designed - you simply pick a number in the upper rpm range that you/you're engine builder are happy with - within reason for the specifications of the engine itself.

Not many piston engines are designed to go over 8000 rpm; even in high states of tune.
