OK we were all young, once. Sad reality is, it often take a big shunt to wake people up. I know being in a head-on slowed me down, my son's did too. Thankfully we are both here, but many don't make it.

I think young people should be encouraged by the Government to join a car club, they will then learn control of their vehicle, and find its limits in a safer environment, and without endangering other road users.

Do you forget being a P plater? Or are you just too cool.

Boo hoo... I'm so sick of these **** stupid topics about P platers.

Nothing can be done to prevent people killing themselves on the road. Really.
A curfew? Then they'll just be more of a maniac in less time they CAN be on the road...
A ban? Then they'll be out on the road, unlicenced, no insurance, liability is 100%, then they crash and its taxpayers who pay their bills if they cant.
Getting your car crushed? There's plenty more fish in the sea.
A power restriction? I don't think so... look at how many minis are getting around that are modified without proper brakes, etc.

Keep thinking. I'm lost too.

I havent read any of the responses, but obviously limit car engine size will do something that will be to the good of cutting crashes, deaths, whatever. But telling P platers they cant have V8's is ridiculous. I would get extremely angry if i was told i couldn't have my V8 AP6, if i had one, and i would,

Obvioulsy there is no solution to whatever the problem peoples think there are, Because there has to be a line drawn somewhere, But wherever the line is put people will want to take it a little bit further each way, So P platers will end up being stuck on Push Bikes

Na, to hell with L-platers, P-platers and repeat offenders. Make em all drive Nikki's.

More seriously...... the only way anything can be controlled, is if all cars were somehow destroyed, and all people were made to buy non-upgradable vehicles fitted with traction / stability control, that cant physically exceed 110 kmh.

And the roads themselves...... there should not be 2 lanes of opposing direction. Roads should flow in 1 direction - eliminate the possibility of head-on collisions.

How about having..... helmets and Hans Devices.....MANDATORY for high speed driving

Short story.... When i was 19, i signed for my first ever car loan ($20,000) for a supercharged MR2. This thing was illegal as hell. In ONE year I spent another $10,000 on 2 new engines with gearboxes (constant thrashing), 2 speeding tickets, 4 sets of tyres...... then sold the car for only $10,000. All in 1 year. It took me 5 years to recover from my financial situation. I never killed anyone, or had any accidents (other than drifting side-on into a gutter - 2 bent Simmons mags  ).

I did not know how to drive that car at a normal rate of acceleration - it had lots of power, so i used it.... at every chance. I dont know how i only got caught speeding twice.

Owning that car for that year did not really teach me anything..... other than the fact that i now love superchargers

Its funny how all the negative arguments that some of you younger guys are putting forward (you know who you are :) ) were never raised when the similar laws for motorcycle licences were introduced. It had no effect on the number of people taking up licences for riding motorcycles, and the number of higher performance 250s within the new laws limits that were reliable, and affordable, increased. That was the dawn of the age of 4 cylinder 250cc 4 strokes and the demise of the 250cc 2 cylinder 2 stroke in this country.

A similar thing will happen in the marketplace for smaller 4 cylinder cars that are right on the limit of the laws allowance. The hot hatch will return.

Not all the new is bad guys. If for 1, 2, or 3 years you are restricted, it will keep more of you alive so that you can truly appreciate getting something with better power to weight later. And you can save heaps of money in the meantime or build the project car to be ready the day you come off the restrictions. crap i wish someone would have loaned me $20k when i was 20 yrs old to get a decent car. I had $500 to spend on a car, which is why i got a Mini :D

I think the real thing that p platers and all other dickhead drivers need, is a close accident. i dont know how they could do it. But my attitude to driving changed HEAPS after having an accident, even tho i haven't ever crashed with me behind the steering wheel. I have crashed a number of times with other people. Each time it could have gone bad, like dead bad. And since then my driving has changed so much.

Invincibility kills.

Having an accident never slowed me down. My first car was speed limited (renault 750). It would not go over 70mph down a hill with a tail wind, mind you it had a serious lack of brakes so it was a good thing. It was only after I bought my first car which had a bit of power and certainly not a lot of power that I began to hit things. I do not believe that any legislation will prevent young people having accidents but it should have some effect if done thoughtfully. Once a rev head always a rev head IMO.

willy, willy, willy..

it wasn't a p plater topic... it was a prospective legislationary topic.

yes i remember being a p plater , and I remember thinking, i don't want to be an idiotic driver like everyone else my age seemed to be. And i still haven't had an accident, 6 years later, no matter how much people seem to want to hit me.. ; )

if you feel hard done by as a p plater and you feel like your marked. then DON'T do 100m handbrakies, and make all the non p plater pigeon holers start thinking that p platers are sensible drivers...
