Exhaust valves on smallbores can get bent if they hit the top of the block- but that only can happen if valve is bigger than 27mm.
If bore is over stock you can go a little bigger.

yeh thats a good point, but there were no marks on the block or the gasket or anything, still a mystery the bore is certainly big enough

jut the loss of power down low.

who knows how it happened, and yep all my cars get driven moderately hard, but within their own limits.

And when it "blows up" because you over advanced it???

it would stop going hard before you advanced it that much i think.

Which of our Kiwi contingent was it that lent a race engine to someone who advanced it too far by hooking up a vacuum advance and caused it to ventilate the block ...... Simple laws of mechanics , get it running by lining up with #1 at TDC then time with a light , don't F@#$ around by ear unless you REALLY , Really know what you're doing .

was only bent by less than a fraction. you couldnt tell with the naked eye, but enough to make it not seat properly.

ah facts are wrong this is what happens when you run a motor on 91 octane fuel when it was set up to run on 98 minimum.

I used to run whatever.

91 or 95, 95 in preference. But 91 a lot of the time. Didn't make a difference to performance or anything, mind you, both my engines are fairly low compression and don't have fancy cams or anything, and we've always used safe ignition timing for these reasons.

Now it's 98 in my car only, and 95 in the clubby as many places (the places I use) only sell 95 or 98, no crappy 91.
