Mk 1 "S" block part number AEG312. Main bearing caps - no cast part No. But should have stamped 4 digit number that corresponds to the number stamped on the block (generally on the front of the block next to the water pump).

Is this still the motor you were asking about before that's an unknown quantity , does it have caps with it ? The caps are matched to the block and other caps will require tunnel boring to match which is an extra expense if not there , something to keep in mind .

Pretty sure all S blocks Mk1 and 2 have that same casting number on. All or most Mk1s were thin flange though I think.
Thick flange block is more rigid.

I just thought i'd add mr vizards book says thin flanged blocks can flex and cause oil leaks, that would have to be a pretty powerfull motor wouldn't it? Does putting the bigger bolts in the thin flange help this...anyone had this problem or is it bit of a myth...

I've had a couple of Mk1 S thin flanged road motors, the 1st had standard 1/4" bolts and the 2nd had 5/16". Neither leaked oilz.
I think it matters more on competition motors.

Used thin flanged Mk1 blocks in my J car. Never had any dramas with oil leaks except when a cam follower let go at 8000rpm. Punched holes in front and back of block - oo ah!!!!
