As I was speaking to my engineer on a furture project that I am planning, the question was raised to him about removeable front ends or flips etc and the car in question was a 62 850, he said he has no problems with that on the 62 model but i also ask what if it was on a 71 model mini round nose and he said no.

Here is mine glassfibre front, takes about 10min to take the front off and is only taken off if really need be, Otherwise the bonnet removes for easy maintenance. The other main reason i went this way, is that i didn't want to cut the flaires (i think they look tackei, when sliced) and like i stated no one would know otherwise.

most race guys here in NZ have a removable front end. Just makes access so much easier when doing those crud jobs, as you have mentioned. They retain the steel front, which is basically screwed back on afterwards, no flip mechanism or anything to that effect. It would be great to do, but I just cant bring myself to cut the panels. Trimming the guards for the 12" wheels was nerve racking enough.

post plenty of pics up when you are done, as it will be good to see. Might give me the courage I need to have a crack.

heres some pics from today,

i have worked out all the mounts i want to use

2 picesof angle welded to the seam pices on the inside, which will have a striop of rubber between them and 2 bolts, thats on both sides by the a panels.

then i will use the standard subframe mounts down the bottom, modified a we bit and a hook added!

heres my old bung front, anyone want it??? its yours or scrap.

looks familiar :P

i left both lips on mine cos it holds the strength a bit...

with mine (not flip but removable) i used a rover front like urs.. fitted up easy.. when you attach it used doits (spelling) clips.. they are the little round things on formula cars and stuff , they are really tidy and strong. if i was you i wouldnt bother with making it a flip front, it just make it so the bonnet can come off.. and if you really want it off then just pull the whole thing off and put it over somewhere else seeing as ittle be in the way if its infront of the motor anyway. but its ur car.

heres mine when i just finished it if it helps.. prolly not..

thats the plan s meeni,

any chance of getting some more pics on how yours is done,

mainly the seams?

cheers jamie

heres an abstract from transport sa 8)

Tilt Fronts
"Tilt front" is a term used to describe a type of forward pivoting integral engine bonnet, grille and front
mudguard assembly for front engine vehicles. Examples of production vehicles fitted with this type of engine
access are the Jaguar "E" Type and the Triumph Herald.
The fitting of a tilt front will be acceptable to Transport SA providing that:-
a. The new body sections are designed and constructed with no dangerous or sharp projections so that in
the event of an accident the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists is minimised.
b. The new body sections do not obstruct the visibility of lamps fitted to the front of the vehicle and in
particular the direction turn signal lamps or headlamps.
Transport SA
September 2003 Modifications to Passenger Cars, Car Type Utilities and Panel Vans Page 19 of 25
c. The new body sections do not obstruct the field of view of the driver. The field of view requirements are
determined as follows;
• With the drivers seat in the rearmost position, it shall be possible to see, unobstructed for the full
width of the vehicle, a line drawn on the roadway 11 metres ahead of the "driver's eye position"
when looking over the bonnet. For the purpose of this requirement the "driver's eye position" shall
lie at the bottom of the of the 95th percentile eye ellipse (reference ADR 15/01 clause 15.1.5.1).
• Alternatively the "driver's eye position" can be taken as a point 750 millimetres above and 270
millimetres forward of the junction of the seat cushion and seat squab with the seat in the lowest
and rearmost position.
d. All lights fitted meet the requirements of Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 1999 and ADR 6 or
6/00
e. The anchoring, hinge and latching mechanisms are durable and have sufficient strength to secure the
hinged section. Transport SA may request a submission from a Chartered Professional Engineer if
doubt exists concerning the strength of components.
f. In the case of passenger cars and derivatives manufactured on or after 1st January 1969, an engineering
report presented by a Chartered Professional Engineer would be required, which demonstrates that the
vehicle continues to comply with Australian Design Rule requirements in addition to the above.
