Guys, how easy is it to fit a kit to a remote change MK1 gearbox, and what is involved in the process.........

Extremely easy, just undo your two gear lever plate bolts from inside,
kit comes with longer bolts.

When you do the conversion, check the plastic bush on the end of the lever for wear,
chech your selector bolts are tight, wear on bronze bushes and wear in the remote shaft. The better these are... the better the new shifter works

Now would i be correct in saying that the ability to select and find the gates will be improved by this???? or not????..... or the aim of the kit is just to improve the throw of the gearshift???? :? :? I am new to all of this and find it a bit confusing

i'd also like to know :wink:
doesnt it make the feel for gears alot tighter?
like there's only 1 place u can go, where as mine even when it sits in first it can still be wobbled around

Might be better on a rodchange (which needs it I reckon), but on a remote, there have been reports in US that the gate feel is crap with this conversion.
BTW they should be called a short shift, NOT a quickshift.

Dunno why you would bother on a remote- the shift distance is already about 1/2 what a rodchange is! :lol:

Don't know about gates...but you certainly shorten the throw...however....
remember. too quick and you will still beat the synchros :roll:

On my rod change, I have the "quick shift" fitted. It is SO much tighter when the gear is selected and there is virtually no movement inside the gear. I would recommend this for sure. Its great...

But... you gotta practice LIFTING for reverse (my selector rod was rooted so i didnt used to have to lift :lol: )

About 10x up and down the driveway gives some good practice for this :wink:

The best way to improve the gate lockout on a remote change is chuck the old spring (under a hex plug or reverse switch, near oil filter) and fit a heavier one- a `blue' or `red' die spring.

A few people on here use them - Gafmo has one, also Ozmotorsport. :P

what exactly does that do doc?
and near the oil filter? :shock:
on the same side as the oil filter or opposite?
i've got a remote change aswell. u dont recommend a quickshift?

Go the Remot as doc as has mention with the spring...
1st to forth is nice and tight...The big R is a push ti the right with a noice you will get to notices....nice


I am Converted...I have also heard that the quick shift stuffs your sinck's
Do as the Doc has said...I'm pleased and so is the Wife, and that has to be good :idea:

There is a spring inside the box, just below the oil filter. Its purpose is to block the reverse gate, but it's pretty weak even when new. Over time, the selector rod and lockout plunger get slightly worn and you can hit thru the gate too easy on the 2-3 upshift.
Fitting a stronger spring fixes this. It goes in from outside- easy peasy. :wink:
Watch the length of the spring it's compressed length must be the same as original.

No I don't like quickshifts on remote boxes. These are `quicker' than a rod change to start with. :lol:

Yeah i agree with the Doc, i have a DOC prepared spring and it made a big difference, but i also have the KAD qik shift (remote type) and its not too bad, takes time to get used to and when going hard it can be tricky to get third and also has a tendency to stick in reverse but it is not a bad conversion for the price i paid (nix).
