When I was making enquiries about having the speedo recalibrated I was asked the question "Do you want the odometer reset to zero at the same time?"

Resetting must be different to "winding back" an odometer which I understood to be illegal.

As my motor and most of the car will be rebuilt by the time it is finished having a zero odometer would fit with a "new" car.

Looking at the cost of recalibation and reset I may as well spend about $50 more a buy a new one from Mini Spares but in case I don't does anyone know if resetting the odometer is 'doable' to the home based tinkerer?

Dave, I sent my speedo forward to 00000 using a speedo cable and a reversable drill.

If the speedo is from a roundie just take off the glass and then push sidewards and move the numbers with your fingers.. not that of course I have done this, just heard it from a friend of a friends friend :P

My hat off to your patience. I disassembled the odometer and zeroed it manually. It's quicker, provided you don't break it!

nuh can't be done. the tabs on the number reels will all be crooked, so when you start to do some miles it looks shithouse.

Yeah, when my old one died, the guys said it was cheaper to buy a re-conded one than fix the old one, and it was zeroed when I got it. Great, '65 mini, with 9000miles on the clock :D

Havent done it to Mini's but have done it to Sigma's (shudder) and Honda's. Used to use a small flat blade to push the number sideways where it can be moved by hand. As mentioned you need to line them up carefully though.

We used to do it when we replaced the speedo under Warranty, had to set it to what the reading on the original one was.

That is why I mentioned it my original post - as I was offered to have the odometer 'zeroed' by the reputable speedo rebuilder and calibrator.

Is there a technical difference between zero and 'wound back' a few thousand clicks to make it look good. :?

NO....not a sausage of a difference....tampering with an odometer is still illegal.

So when i replaced my speedo/odometer with a new one that actually worked but didn't read the same number it was illegal :? hmmm, i know what i'd prefer!
Anyhow, a 5 digit odometer.... how many times can that go round the clock, pfft. Seriously, on a car of my minis age, who knows whats original. Maybe the panels....

Well they'll all make zero eventually anyway and then go back around again, most minis won't be far off this anyway. So these days it might be pretty explainable.
