Ok so heres the story.. I have a hydro mini and I'm going to be running adjustable coil-overs so I'm ripping the bags out, bla, bla. The subframes are in surprisingly good condition so I'd like to keep them.

What I want to know is is there anyway I can soft-mount the hydro subframe instead of solid-mounting it? I just want a less brutal ride.. still stiff (i mite use some kind of poly bush or something)

If you want a soft ride you should have left the hydro in the car.

The later Rovers are soft mount, no australian car was.
As such the mounting points for the subframes differ (at least for the front, unsure of the rear). The fron apron panel differs in the front subframe mounts as it must leave a larger gap between the subframe and the panel for the rubber mount.

So maybe you can soft mount it, but it will take some modification.

Poms like to convert their soft mounted subframes back to solid.

Well thats interesting.. I wasnt sure whether the dry subs were soft mounted or not. There must be a reason why they revert them back so I think I'll just keep them solid mounted then, less work for me!

I haven't managed to read through the marketing hype, but people reckon that the subframes shift a little under extreme cornering and this leads to a little vagueness. But I'm sure I've also read that it's pretty minor. I don't know if it's the need to buy stuff to make you go faster (even if it doesn't) or if it's just leads to a real difference.

I'd love to hear some input from the Rover driving ranks on this before moving on, any more feedback out there?

Replacing the subframe rubbers with new rubber (not urathane) inserts will go a long way, also look at the engine steadies, it was pretty common to replace these with urathane inserts. these transmit a lot of vibration and road noise to the cabin. There's always earplugs and a bigger radio however....

The Pommy rubber mounted subbys are so sloppy, they move in the body when you turn the wheels to and for.
No wonder they convert them back...
The coilovers usually mount on the top shock mounts which (surprise, surprise..) are on the BODY, not the subby.
So, methinks you will have noise transmission probs anyway, rubber subby or not.

Good point.. its suddenly not looking like such a good idea, or even worth it for that matter...

soft mounting of the subbies allowed for the worn out panelling machines (forty years old) used to make the body. That is the tolerances that used to be + or - 1 milimetre grew to + or - 2.5 milimetres for example.
anyway why ruin the greatest assett of a Mini and kill the handling? By a Hyundi Excel.

If you want rubber mounted frames, just put a rover front one in...
but yes they do move around.
but if its a daily driver the nicer drive makes it ok.
