i have a 2 inch carby among the spare parts i got with my mini, is it possible to use this on the car at all? would it be worth it over a twin 1.25 or 1.5 setup? or just a single 1.75"

You can use a 2" SU on a Mini, it's been done, but would generally only be required for a high performance motors. I'm not sure about manifolds, you may be able to modify an HS6 manifold. Will probably be hard to fit an air filter though.

Thats a big carbie. I dont think a mini would have the flow and volume to take advantage of a carb that big.

it would be ok just jet it right the SU has a butterfly and a piston that adjusts the size of the throat of the carby. It may suffer a little down low but should be ok from mid to high range.

I ran this 2" SU on my rally mini for a while & it worked very very well, it did take a little while to sort the needle & spring for it, (Not Hard tho) but it did work very very well indeed.

However!!!!!!!!! That motor is a 1510cc engine, a small bore isn`t the donk i`d fit a 2" onto.

Yeah well,,, that`s a bloody big donk that needs to breath a bloody lot, there`s 2 other breathers on it too :-) Plus, if you look under that big upper breather, you will notice a great big drain/breather to the fuel pump hole too :-) & another one just like it on the other end of the rocker cover down to the primary case breather hole :-)

Bloody Big Donks Need Bloody Big Breathers me ol` matey :-)

Vizard mentions 2 inch SU's in his Yellow book - he simply says "give it back to the jaguar owner you stole it off".

I don`t mean to Bag Vizard at all, but i don`t believe he spent much time working with sorting the issues of running a 2" SU on a large capacity road going mini engine, & most of his work in his books shows off stuff that has been & can be done to the "Average" mini engine, (Road/Rally & Race) by the "Average" Joe Blow & his work is excellent in that regard.

& with respect to the question--> "how long will it last?"
Do you mean how long will the 2" carby last? or how long has my 1510cc engine lasted?

The carb will last for ages, it`s just a carby.

& my 1510cc engine is still in good nick, nearly 9 years running on the road/rallys/hillclimbs/sprints etc etc & a Targa tasmania rally (2002) & then another year of club motorsport & is now out for a simple re-ring & bearing re-build. easy-peasy. it will go another 10-20 years i expect too. It`s only quite mild engine build with respect to the cam shaft profile & compression so it doesn`t work hard producing it`s power, it happilly pulls wide open throttle at 1000 rpms & revs to 7800. It`s just a road motor, hence the SU carb, (but i did run a weber on it at Targa tassie Rally tho, the weber gave me that tiny bit more in the upper rev range simply because the manifold is a better design.

In car Targa Rally video footage of it here--->

enjoy :-)

If you consider the throat area of the S.U. carbys
1 1/4" = 1.26 sq " x 2 =2.52 sq"
1 1/2" = 1.79 sq " x 2 =3.58 sq"
1 3/4" = 2.45 sq" x 2 =4.90 sq"
2" = 3.14 sq" x 2 =6.28sq"
Two 1 1/2" has bigger throat area than a single 2".
I have set up a 2" on a worked 1100 eng. The carby was modified and ran a blue spring with a ABT needle and .090 jet. The biggest problem is to get the piston to lift as engine builds up revs and as steve says to avoid flat spot.
It can be done and works quite well.
