OK after the 3 layer aralditing of the gearbox (gravity sux) and doing everything up, it holds the oil and water in (not in the same part of the engine  ) problem is won't start.

Differences besides being in a physically different car.
1. Negative earth on the car it came out of, positive earth on the 850. Makes no difference to the spark. Checked and rechecked the firing order. All OK as far as i can tell. Got some new leads just to be sure and got a better spark than the old ones (not surprised) still wont start

2. Same single SU but now has the normal air cleaner instead of the ramflow that was on the other car. Standard cast iron manifold and exhaust, instead of the 3-1 headers and large exhaust. I figured that this would have made the mixture too rich, as the setup in the other car had much better gas flow. Filled the float bowl up to be sure, cranked it until the fuel was coming into the filter next to the float bowl. Tried to start without the lid on the air cleaner, with and without choke. got nothing but the occasional backfire out the carb. Books suggest the carb is "maladjusted". Besides the psychological problems the carb is having, can anyone tell me roughly what mixture they set their single 1.25 SU on a 998 to?

Am i on the right track?

if you have spark, and you have fuel, then you must be firing in the wrong order or the wrong time. Find tdc and set your dissy accordingly, did you pull it out when you swapped the engine? are you connecting the leads anti clockwise? if you don't have any luck, give me a bell and maybe we can fumble thru it together. Then we will get doogie to come round and start it.

Cheers

Aaron

Same dizzy as was in the engine the whole time. Yep checked TDC no 1 cylinder, rotated 1-3-4-2 anticlockwise with the leads. initially had 3-4 mixed up - brain fade  - and the ignition of the fuel with the exhaust valve open was exciting  scared the crap out the five dock mafia next door, who came running out to see who was shooting at them 8)

i will probably not have another go until later in the week because i am supposed to be doing a project assignment for my masters........i'll give you a call. If you do come you may be lucky enough to see the blue mk1 cooper s that was around the corner number plate MKI680. veery niiice. it was parked on park st (where else  )

moke would fire first up but wont continue
the ignition lead from ignition to coil wasnt good

if it turns over, i think youve got the problem of keeping it going
ie. 'leccy stuff

i've found that once you set it up and get it started, then look after it, they are reliable as anything else. its just when you do stupid things like change engines and components around

i'll still bring it around if i can start it
