OK after the 3 layer aralditing of the gearbox (gravity sux) and doing everything up, it holds the oil and water in (not in the same part of the engine

) problem is won't start.
Differences besides being in a physically different car.
1. Negative earth on the car it came out of, positive earth on the 850. Makes no difference to the spark. Checked and rechecked the firing order. All OK as far as i can tell. Got some new leads just to be sure and got a better spark than the old ones (not surprised) still wont start
2. Same single SU but now has the normal air cleaner instead of the ramflow that was on the other car. Standard cast iron manifold and exhaust, instead of the 3-1 headers and large exhaust. I figured that this would have made the mixture too rich, as the setup in the other car had much better gas flow. Filled the float bowl up to be sure, cranked it until the fuel was coming into the filter next to the float bowl. Tried to start without the lid on the air cleaner, with and without choke. got nothing but the occasional backfire out the carb. Books suggest the carb is "maladjusted". Besides the psychological problems the carb is having, can anyone tell me roughly what mixture they set their single 1.25 SU on a 998 to?
Am i on the right track?
