My car is now pretty darn quiet for 120hp. 95% of the sound is now coming from the intake

Yes, it can be the case that induction noise is louder than the exhaust, especially with a Weber or Dellorto.
I was pinged for excessive noise once at a meeting at Philip Island. The EPA guy told me to forget about the exhaust because the noise was a combination of straight cut gear whine and induction noise. A hastily made up baffle box from a cardboard beer carton, fitted under the bonnet and around the Weber reduced the noise to an acceptable level.

I used to run a straight through 2" system and the car was fairly noisy but I am using a two piece RC-40 now and that has quietened it down a lot but still has a nice tone to it.

Makes it a nicer car to drive over distance now.

My original exhaust was way too loud, could couldn't talk at 110kph, and you could actually feel the tingling in you ears. I replaced the muffler with a larger straight through muffler which sounds much better and got a couple of hp out of it as a bonus.

Yours would probably do well up against the Toyoata Corona up and down main street Gulgong. Shorter cruising too. Each lap of town is less than a kilometre.

Mokesta had the RC40 rear box only (you could see through it if the outlet wasn't bent) and I added a straight through Hot-dog (resonator) now it is really good.

Camilla just had the RC40 rear box and was too noisy.

 I know Joe, I was just pulling your leg. Just make sure that those that hear you coming and look out for you arn't also driving cars with blue and red flashing lights.

I like a car with a "note" as much as anyone else but I have grown too old to really enjoy a car with "noise" - they both are quite different.

Merry Christmas Joe, and thanks for being a sport.
Mike

My Clubman GT was my only car for many years (standard exhaust and intake) and it was so noisy I could barely hear the stereo at 110kmh. Most of the noise came from the engine rather than the exhaust.

When I restore it I intend to Dynamat the whole thing to see if it makes it more liveable. It's nice to have that great exhaust note but I could do without the rest of the noise.

My S has a nice tone to it, and you can hear it coming from a fair distance away, but oddly it doesn't sound anywhere near as loud as my K from inside the cabin.

The K was completely original with absolutely nothing changed, so it had stock exhaust.

Personally i like the purr of the engine, the hammering of the tappets and the whine of the gearbox :)

If I use a 2 box system would I have to step up from 1 3/4 inch as planned or would it not be to restrictive ?

1 3/4" diameter is the perfect size for most modified mini motors, only those really worked motors, race engines and big bore strokers will need bigger, and even then 1 7/8" or 2" is the right size.

Stick to the 1 3/4"!!

Cheers
M

You really don't know which size suits best until you dyno it.
My 1360 (282 cam) needs 2", the 1412 (RE13 cam) ran best with 1-7/8".
But a 1-3/4" is the best starting point for any road motor.

one other thing guys, did any of you guys have your cars tested, as in (forgot what they measure sound with / DB) test it with the meter,

i was going to get a 440mm (length) and 2" straight through muffler and see how that went, i was wandering if anyone had a part number of the one they used, local exhaust shop only had 2 they could order,
