Hi there,

Put the new (2nd hand) 1100 in yesterday, started it up and it ran OK for a while. The gearbox is rooted, 2nd gear crunches in both directions and jumps out :( but its only a temp whilst I rebuild the original.

After driving for about 15 mins and checking everything is tight, retaining fluids etc, my Son took it out for the evening, got up the street and it died. Cranks, fires, runs for about 5 seconds, then dies. It used to do this intermittently with the old engine but would start up straight away and keep going.

OK, so I have done the following:

*Pulled out the 998, and replaced it with the 1100 purchased last week
*Used the twin SU's off the original motor
*Used the original Dizzy. The 1100 one had vacuum advance and the original doesn't. There's no vacuum advance take off on the twins.
*Used the original Coil as it was still wired up. Its a little plastic modern type. Not sure if I like it though.

When it stops, the Fuel Filter is still full of fuel, and having twins it shoould sorta run if one had a sticking needle and seat etc.

I'm not sure what to do next. I'll probably go and replace the coil with the one that came with the 1100 and see if that helps. I'll also take some wire and aligator clips and see if it could be faulty wiring.

I knew part of my Easter was going to be taken up with the Mini, but it's starting to look like more, if not all.

Gotta love cars eh?

Oh, No1 Son just called in, his Laser has no power and when the boost light comes on it sounds horrible.

If I sold all of my tools does that stop Children bringing their cars over?

hey

I was having a similar problem with my 998 last week. it would run perfectly then just randomly when ever it felt like it, turn off. everything still kept power nothing seemed unusual but it woodnt start again untill the engine had completly stoped. which ment i had to actully pull the car over cause it would run-on otherwise. when i cranked it over it wood fire and run perfectly untill it died again.. turns out it was actully the coil.. replaced it a couple days ago and hasnt done it since.. gota love cars ahh..

catch ya

Sounds to me like you've got an intermittent electrical problem, that still exists with the new (S/H) engine. I'd be looking at dodgy wiring somewhere, possibly fuse box (is dissy/coil etc fused??) or look at the dissy and coil themselves. Do you have spares?

'twas the Coil. It had GT40T on it and now has a good old GT40. Runs like a dream now. Noticeably more go than the 998, mybe I'll put this engine on the other Gearbox.......once I find out where the piece of gear in the oil came from.

It's small (radius) and the engine has a very faint knock when running, but doesn't change with load. Could it be a broken drop gear or idler?

Ah well, at least its drivable again.

Cheers,

Dicko

The trouble with using a GT40-R with points (and no ballast resistor) is they get too hot after a little, then they don't work. Gafmo had the same problem a while ago.
Oh and the extra current burns the points out too.

Wasn't an "R" but a Transformer type GT40-T

Points and condensor arent all that old. It's still running great with the GT40 on it.

Problem solved :D

usually a bad condensor (open circuit ) will allow it to start and idle, but won't rev up, it misses and pops
