Original early 850 had pullcords, as in my first (`61) car.
Cooper 997 was the first here with the chromed crap inside levers (that break easy).
Later sliding doors, not sure. As I said my `64 850 (sold to Anton & Co) had windups when I got it.

Yes this is true.
The 'Changeover' 850 had wind up doors one peice roof lining and also the Aussie style bootlid. I actually had sold one last year all original too.

I believe the pull cords were a "period accessory" but were not too common, especially here in Oz. Its easy to make your own (and I did  ) but nothing looks as good as the originals. 8)

Now we wait for all the newbies to start asking.... "..pullcords??"

I think pull cords was the first method of opening sliding window doors they came up with in the UK. Not a period accessory.

Australia pioneered wind up window doors as the Doc has said and these were fitted fairly early because of our climate (and the need for 4X100 A/C).

BTW believe you can still buy a plastic Mini shell from South America. Maybe the Brits should have used them to combat salt induced metal rot.

Oz 850s were still made up until 66-67, these had windups and were badged `Morris Mini Minor'.
Gov't dep'ts took a bunch of them.

The one piece headliner came in in `64. My 850 had one, was original- the pattern matched the sun visors.
But the doors... in 64 we had yet to get windups. Someone swapped them.

Yep, Dr is right as usual, my 66 Morris Mini Minor originally had windy window doors, but i put slidey window doors in to save weight. My 64 850 has one piece headlining, slidey window doors with chrome lever (a la UK Cooper & Cooper S) and narrow number plate holder on the boot.

66-67 Morris Mini Minor was the base base model. Like Doc says, think fleet car. No heater, no fancy bits and pieces like the bumper over riders or deluxe grille, just the absolute bare minimum. Mine was originally Toga White with a red interior.

Don't confuse the Changeover Minis to the Government issue Poverty Pack MInis.
BMC would use whatever was available in the parts bins to make up the minis. During the changeover period Deluxe stuff was put on 850s. During the "Mk one" to "Mk two" Cooper 'S' changeover you can see early badges on old shells, mixes in upholstry, etc etc etc. Interesting enough I believe the Cooper 'S' was never officially identified in Australia as a Mk 1 or Mk 2. Just a Cooper 'S'. Probably helped in the changeover.

The commonly called Poverty Pack' were government fleet cars not only limited to the 850. I had a blue Mini 'K' pov pack. It didn't have the full gauges, just a speedo. No heater, plain upholstry & magic wand gear leaver (still all syrco box).

And you'd probably guess right that it still happens. Some of the last EL Falcons got AU engines in them, seeing as they were producing AU motors well before the EL production run ended.

My Dad had one of these and yes I think that happens in all the Manufacturers.

a mate of mine had a Mini with pull cords and we both thought they were crap. He ended up putting in levers

and then he found he didn't like the levers cause they break...

so he put wind up doors on bot found that they were bloody heavy and the cheap plastic flippers inside break regularly....

so he went to after market die cast units but wait!!! he found there was no easy way to mount these humongous castings onto a Masonite door card!!

So he bought an EL Falcon with an AU engine.....

(I'll stop now.... :? )

Hey you got to realise in the 1960's we didn't have the benefit of hindsight!! and when the lever handles broke you replaced it - it took a while to realise a design fault
