Then when pulling towards you wiggle the s/wheel side to side with some force and it should come off the splines quite easily. Also a sqirt of wd40, rp7, inox, etc where the splines are in the centre of the boss may help too.
You don't need to pull, you just slap it downwards quite harshly repeatedly and then lift it off. No need for WD40. I have done it on hundreds of different cars.

that's a trick I remember being taught in my first year as well. Works on all kinds of applications..

Done! All it needed was good whallop. Now, please tell me getting the new one on isn't going to be as hard. certainly looks a tight fit. I'm off to work, will have a go in the morning.

that's a trick I remember being taught in my first year as well. Works on all kinds of applications..
Tapers and tapered splines hold very well against a direct pull or rotation, that is why they use them in these applications.
But a knock the wrong way seems to confuse them. :lol:

When pullers weren't available, by knocking the shaft with a copper hammer you could get the bearing or whatever it was to 'walk' up toward you. It used to baffle me at the time, but I didn't care if it made the day a little easier..

It didn't work every time, but the ingenuity and general dodgy techniques would then come to the fore in removing the stubborn so and so.

-Sigh- The saga continues.

Despite thousands of assurances from the kid at AutoOne, the boss kit he gave me (free, I might add, so not complaining too loudly here) for the wheel I purchased is too small, the spindle size is off, not by a lot, but still a good millimetre or so, and after a lot of loud banging all I am achieving is slowly flattening the centre bolt thread. I don't suppose anyone knows the specific measurements for the spindle on a Clubbie? Should I be hunting down something mini specific, or should I be able to grab a generic boss no worries?

What ever you do - please don't damage the spline!

Take the boss back and get one to suit a mini. Don't wreck the steering.

My SAAS boss kit was specific for mini and was about $80 10yrs ago.
