Ive got a few, one cheapo that doesn't click anymore (and is great for doing up hubnuts), a Sidchrome 150, and 2 SnapOn, I think 1 is 75 and the other is 120 maybe??

You get what you pay for, the only ones I used in aviation were Snap-On and another well-known (can't think of atm) brand

Thanks for the input guys. I couldn't find any Warren and Brown ones in the shops that I went to so I ended up getting a Sidchrome one.

20 - 200ft/lbs. Feels nice in my hand and came with a little certificate thing that says it's accurate to within +/- 2% and it has a lifetime warranty. Spent more than I was originally looking at but I think it was worth it.

As you can see I went for a bendy bar type, not the clicker type.

<edit> it's 1/2" drive but I also got a adaptor that goes down from 1/2" drive to 3/8" drive.

ours would all be 1/2" drive too - mine is

you'll be buying a 3/4" adapter one day... so you can do up flywheel and harmonic balancer nuts :D

It may not be a Warren & Brown but it sure looks like a Warren & Brown. I wonder who makes them for Sidchrome?
Did it come with any instructions? (like don't use it to undo things?)

Yeah it did come with instructions. As you said don't undo things with it and a few other things (like some torque's for various types of threads).

Good buy Nick, this thread gave me the idea to look for one too. I haven't got one yet but I did look at those ones

Warren & Brown have the patent for the deflecting beam torque wrench. Probably why you don't see Chinese knock offs (yet). Years ago they made them for Repco. I bet they make these for Sidchrome as well.

Warren & Brown used to be owned by Repco back in the days when Repco was more than a chain of crappy parts stores.

I have a Sidchrome bendybar one that is 40+ years old - can it be recalibrated and if so where? It has a piece of twisted metal that 'clicks' over a pin and over the years the piece of metal has taken some punishment. and I'm not sure it is accurate anymore

I just Googled "torque wrench calibration" and found this place... http://www.torquecalibrationservices.com.au/ They look like they know whay they are doing.

I compared my 200lb 1/2" drive to my 300lb 3/4' drive using an offset adaptor and found them both to read the same right through the range. So if one is wrong then they both are.

Equipment calibration is a growing industry. Companies working to quality guidelines (basically anyone who wants to sell to government organisations or want the large contracts) must show that calibrated devices (such as torque wrenches) meet specifications. That would probably include the major dealerships and service centers. They have to be able to provide proof of tool calibrations to inspectors on demand. There should be plenty of service providers in the state.
If they can't calibrate it, they will issue the cal certificate and a sticker showing the offset required.

The bendy ones can be adjusted for cal, I believe that the hammer shaped device that you line the desired torque up against is threaded. So if it is out they can screw this in a half turn to get it a little closer.

Using these wrenches to undo a nut is a cardinal sin. It simply ruins the calibration.

i know of one particular vendor selling calibration services to a government organisation that you may be familiar with. they also told us that they could calibrate a RF power meter for us. duly sent power meter off to them with the full system specs. came back with a calibration sticker on it and all the paperwork, except when inserted in the equipment it did not work. their idea of calibration is to put a sticker with a date on it. not what you want in this particular equipment. needless to say we don't use them anymore, and advised our customer, with whom you may be familiar, that they should also be wary of the services offered by this company. i hope for the sake of the people operating the gear that this advice was taken.

moral of the story is make sure they know what they are doing...

cheers
michael
