Can anyone tell me if this mini is a genuine cooper
I have numbers of the id plate.

type yka251
the oringinal engine number was 9fsal10450

The engine number is now 9fsay47157 (what size is this).
Any info would be great.

Thats an early 997 Cooper . The other engine number is a Mk1 Cooper S , the standard size is 1275

According to PUB 1056M (Australian Mini Series Parts Catalogue) YKA2S1 is the Body Prefix for a 998cc Morris Cooper. The Engine Prefix for a 998cc Cooper is 9FA/SA/H. Whilst a 997cc Cooper has the same Body Prefix the Engine Prefix is 9F/SA/L, so yours should be a 997cc Cooper.
Engine Prefix 9F/SA/Y is for a MK 1 Cooper S (1275cc).
Hope this helps.

YKA2S1 is the prefix for both the 997 and 998 Coopers.
9F/Sa/L is the 997 prefix.

9F/Sa/Y 47157 would be a 1275cc Cooper S engine from about early to mid 68.

This cooper is a 1962 and has disc brakes and twin tanks ,is that standard? and should it have sliding windows.

62 Cooper has 7" discs (smaller than S ones) sliding windows and no RH tank.

Twin tanks no, sliding windows yes, I think the 997 Cooper should also have the UK long rear number plate flap.

AJ - TME is a great read on almost every topic. My memory brain cells continue to leave home so I find I have to go back often if I need to refresh details, and MK II S takes precedance to Cooper.
I'm lucky to have a swag of UK and Australian factory parts manuals so if I think it might help a discussion I quote what a manual says and attribute the information to the source. I'm looking to post a message that lists the numbers of all the factory parts and workshop manuals for the Australian Mini and perhaps the key UK ones, such as the Cooper and S. Do you think such a list would be useful? I'm sure my list won't be complete so there's an opportunity for others to contribute.

Numbers are Cooper 997, motor is; as has been said; a 1275S.

All above info posted is good and I agree, TME article is pretty well spot on, Watto kindly asked me to cast an eye over it before he 'went to press'

The next set of questions should be:

Is the plate still on the original body? What is stamped on the radiator shroud and near to the plate on the bulkhead?

Does the car have three piece stainless steel wheel arch trims, 100mph Cooper speedo, what is the trim like? What type of heater (if fitted)

Definately should not have windy windows or twin tanks!

It is potentially an early car and would be a significant 'find'
