Just dug up a few pics of my old 1293. I had this motor built for me back in 1997 by our one and only "Professional Mini Workshop" here in Cairns. Cost me 5 n a bit grand back in the day. For a 1st year apprentice that was a lot of coin...!

I pulled this down after a years driving at 12,000klms when i pulled my car off the road for the 2nd time.

During this motors 1yr of use I had the following problems.

Cylinder head cracked after 2 months. Replacement head fitted.

Primary gear bush let go, took out primary gear seal which contaminated the clutch. Clutch plate and seal replaced. Not sure what happened with primary gear?

After clutch replaced, suffered from clutch overthrow which stalled the motor when clutch de-pressed...! That was an adjustment issue.

When this motor was stripped, this head was also cracked.

Constant oil leak from clutch case...

So it cost me a bit to keep it running and seemed to be a lemon, but our Mini mechanic didnt seem to think so..........

What a nice surprise

So thats why the clutch case always leaked oil...

Nice wear there!

Great headjob!

Not sure how long it was like this for, I think a while?????

Warped flywheel perhaps?

No such thing as a Lemon unless your talking about the person that has no idea what is wrong or how to fix it

As i was a young teen at the time i thought the best option was to use a mechanic who specializes in Mini's. The motor thats in the car now was built by myself. At least i know theres no silastic in there!!!

They probably were not new to begin with????? I ran it for a few hundred k's with running in oil it, changed the oil/filter on it 3 times over the course of 12,000klms.

Most of the bearing shells looked pink!!!

Plus the money i had to spend to fix it every time it broke.... I learnt my lesson in paying people to do work for me. Your better off doing it yourself.

Sounds like you were ripped off big time, even worse the mechanic did nothing to fix the problems. When I worked for peter (AKA bellarine mini centre here in geelong) we did 1275 rebuilds for $3500-$4500 depending on how must the mechining and gearbox cost us. And we had no complaints about our motors, and if any of our customers had a problem our fault or not we fixed it straight away. It is just good business, once a business gets a bad name it sticks.

He fixed the problems, but i had to pay for it. I was just a young kid at the time and didnt have much mechanical experience. So i payed to have the work done by a Mini Mechanic.

He is the only shop up here in Cairns that knows anything about British auto's......apparently.....?

That $$$ figure only got me an engine rebuild. The gearbox/diff were untouched.
