Damn right insurance is a different matter. Picture this, you are on club rego, but decide to go for a drive thinking that if you get pulled over, that you will say you are on the way to the mechanics. When all of a sudden BAM you hit a Porsche and injure the 82 year old passenger. You put a claim in with your insurance for the damage to the Porsche and the 82 year old puts a claim in on the third party insurance that is part of the club rego because you are at fault and injured her.
BOTH insurances will not pay and you will be liable for everything because you were not driving to/from a club sanctioned (and therefore RTA/VICroads/SAregency etc authorised) event under the scheme. Ah, you say, but I was driving to the mechanics/parts store/testing a repair. Then the insurance company lawyers will ask you to prove that by showing receipts for mechanic/parts or claim that you should not have been driving the car in an unroadworthy state because being unqualified you were not able properly affect the repair. After many months of expensive legal argument, the judge is likely to find at best that you showed contributory negligence, in which case you will still be stuffed, your car will be stuffed and the club rego scheme will be stuffed for everyone else because the media got a hold of the story. You will be shunned as a complete idiot by everyone who uses the scheme legitimately, and you will miss out on valuable help that might just get your Mini repaired if you are still so inclined.
No, it is far better to obey the club rego rules. If the rules are too restrictive, get full rego and talk to Shannons about limited usage insurance. This insurance is far more flexible than the club rego scheme and allows you to go anywhere at anytime. All you need to do is drive less than your nominated km per year. The default is about 20000km so you can easily stay under that for weekends and occasional weekday usage. Last time I used this insurance for a 998cc engined 1964 850, the premium was about $80 for a year.
cheers
