seems to be a big saving in getting a club rego....like a saving of $500
my work is like 5 min down the road....and as i have a suzuki swift 2005 as my daily driver i would only be using it on weekends, and going to mini events etc.
ill look into it further down the track once the mini is completed as i dont realy want to pay $1200 a year in rego cost for two cars so if there s a cheaper alternative ill give it a go.

Just say you're doing 'testing' if pulled over or if you got with mechanic shop etc. then it's simply 'ah just taking it to the mechanics'. If ever pulled over by the boys it's either because you're mini was going over the limit or... they just wanted to check out the hot ride lol - if it's the latter then have smile, offer to show em the car a bit, speak some crap and off you go.

Club plate rego is a fantastic scheme for those who just drive their cars on weekends.

As long as an event is listed in your club mag you can use your car. That's why I always put plenty of events in the MCCNSW magazine so members can have an option each weekend. Technically you're supposed to carry a copy of the club mag with you so you can show the Police if asked.

Be careful pushing the boundaries as far as testing near home goes. If you're caught out you and your club will be in trouble.

At my kids school there was one family who were driving their children to school each day (as they lived not far away) in their historic rego'd Farlaine. That was until one of the other parents who happened to be a Police officer gave them a tap on the shoulder one morning and gave them a friendly warning about using their car that way. Haven't seen it at school since. :)

Damn right insurance is a different matter. Picture this, you are on club rego, but decide to go for a drive thinking that if you get pulled over, that you will say you are on the way to the mechanics. When all of a sudden BAM you hit a Porsche and injure the 82 year old passenger. You put a claim in with your insurance for the damage to the Porsche and the 82 year old puts a claim in on the third party insurance that is part of the club rego because you are at fault and injured her.

BOTH insurances will not pay and you will be liable for everything because you were not driving to/from a club sanctioned (and therefore RTA/VICroads/SAregency etc authorised) event under the scheme. Ah, you say, but I was driving to the mechanics/parts store/testing a repair. Then the insurance company lawyers will ask you to prove that by showing receipts for mechanic/parts or claim that you should not have been driving the car in an unroadworthy state because being unqualified you were not able properly affect the repair. After many months of expensive legal argument, the judge is likely to find at best that you showed contributory negligence, in which case you will still be stuffed, your car will be stuffed and the club rego scheme will be stuffed for everyone else because the media got a hold of the story. You will be shunned as a complete idiot by everyone who uses the scheme legitimately, and you will miss out on valuable help that might just get your Mini repaired if you are still so inclined.

No, it is far better to obey the club rego rules. If the rules are too restrictive, get full rego and talk to Shannons about limited usage insurance. This insurance is far more flexible than the club rego scheme and allows you to go anywhere at anytime. All you need to do is drive less than your nominated km per year. The default is about 20000km so you can easily stay under that for weekends and occasional weekday usage. Last time I used this insurance for a 998cc engined 1964 850, the premium was about $80 for a year.

cheers
michael

Minimick has got it spot on. People should not abuse the system, because in the end it will ruin it for others.

I think its a great scheme and if and when i get a second mini it will definatly go on historic plates.
