Hi there, been mucking around with the reverse light switch underneath the gear shifter and things went wrong. I had open the round black rubber cap that sit directly underneath the gear shifter, once I opened there were two black clips fell out and I had no idea how to out them back. So I left it out and drove home from the mechanic. Once I get home I was trying to reverse into my car space and unable to do so because I wasn't able to shift from N to R!!!! So I have to push the car backwards. Does anyone have anyone has any idea how does the clip go back in??? Is a 1994 auto gear shift with a P. Anyone has any picture or anything please?? Urgent help needed.

Do you normally have to push a button in to go in reverse?

If so, I'd guess that's where your problem is. The button is no longer connected to whatever locks you out of reverse. That's what I'd be looking for.

Hey, no there is no button or anything, usually just go straight up and down. Just need to reinstall this clip again and it should fix the problem.

Ive never taken that cap off on mine. I've only taken the gearstick out of the base. But I'm sure than mine just had a plunger operating in a sleeve which was slid back and forth when you move the gearstick.

Try taking out the reverse lights switch completely and see if that is jamming it somehow? Maybe it broke up inside there.

Cheers,

ok pull the gear lever housing apart and found another clip jammed to the outer cable which stopping gear lever to go beyond N. Three of the clip was originally from the plastic housing for the gear lever. Removed them all good. Since it was the gear lever was out and the reverse light was reachable I decided to see if I can adjust the switch so I can make the reverse light to come on when I am in R. Currently it will only come on when is in P or N!

sorry to continue on, due to insurficient tools. I only managed to undo one locking nut. Then I detach the wire so I can give it a try but no luck couldn't turn it al all. Maybe I am suppose to unlock the other nut as well. Strangly the two wires that connected to the switch is that suppose to connect to the reverse lights or the inhibitor switch at the front of the engine? When I unplug them the car won't start even though it is in P. If I disconnect the wire at the front of the transmission that connects to the inhibitor switch the reverse lights will not work at all but the car still starts? Just to inform that the wiring has been modified by some electrican somehow he doesn't know what's going on.

It sounds to me like you have the inhibitor switch plugged into the reverse light circuit and the reverse light circuit plugged into the inhibitor. The switch on the front of the gearbox is definitely the inhibitor switch.

Is your shifter a plastic top one like this?

Yeah sounds like the wires are around the wrong way. I would be swapping the wires from the inhibitor switch with those from the reverse light switch.

yep the gear stick look the same. Anyway the wires are for sure connected to the wrong switch. So how does the reverse switch work under the gear lever? Becasue when you push the gear lever all the way to P, the inner cable will touch the switch which will close the circuit for the reverse lights so therefore the reverse light will come on when is in P?
